Michelle Obama, celebs launch voter registration drive for midterms

The new initiative will be nonpartisan, frustrating some Democrats who’d like the former first lady to hit the campaign trail for candidates.

Michelle Obama is jumping into the 2018 campaigns with a voter registration initiative that will be strictly nonpartisan — exciting and frustrating top Democrats who’d like the popular former first lady to actively campaign for candidates.

The initiative, scheduled to be launched Thursday, is the result of months of quiet conversations and planning full of false starts and uncertainty about whether to go forward. It will have the former first lady appear in public service announcements and at live events throughout the country into the fall, according to multiple people informed of the plans.

She’ll be joined by several A-list celebrities, including actor Tom Hanks, country stars Faith Hill and Tim McGraw, Houston Rockets star Chris Paul, singer Janelle Monae and “Hamilton” creator Lin-Manuel Miranda.

The first PSA will go out Thursday, with more in the process of being lined up, featuring other prominent activists and players. The group will be incorporated as a nonprofit, separate from the Obama Foundation, the personal offices of Barack and Michelle Obama, and Citizen 44, the LLC that the former president himself pays for to handle his own political involvement.

Somebody has got to concentrate on that aspect or all that campaigning wont even matter. And what better person to do it than one of the most popular ladies in America? You go, Michelle ! I hope you get tens of thousands more people registered, I really do.

A number of Democrats aren't registered for various reasons. Or don't vote, for various reasons. This needs to change!

Do they need certificates of birth? Help them get them. Do they not know where their polling place is? We need to show them how to find out. Do they not have transportation? We need to help them figure that out. Maybe someone locally can pick up neighborhood people to go vote.

Everyone is important. Every vote is important.

Remind people of their voting places, offer to drive them, help them get the correct voter ID if required in that particular state. I live in SF where voting is very easy but those blood red states need some extra help. Need a ride to vote, need to know where to vote. Call or text and we’ll help you get to the polls and fulfill your citizenship duties.
