Young voters make up significant portion of new registrations in key states since Parkland shooting
Source: NBC News
Young voters are flocking to register to vote in key battleground states in the wake of the February school shooting at a Parkland, Fla. high school, according to a new analysis from Democratic data firm TargetSmart.
The report, released exclusively to NBC News, shows that young voters between the ages of 18 and 29 years old make up an increasing share of those registering to vote in a handful of key states.
Pennsylvania has seen the sharpest increase61 percent of new voter registrations come from young voters, compared to 45 percent before the shooting.
Virginia, Indiana and New York have all seen an increase of about 10 percentage points in the youth share of new voter registrants, while Arizona and Florida have seen gains of about 8 percent. All of these states are home to some key Senate or House races that will play a crucial role in deciding control of Congress.

(11,519 posts)It seems that many times younger voters will register in droves, vote once or twice, and then lose all enthusiasm for the political process. (Of course repubs make every attempt to help them lose their enthusiasm, knowing that they'll be shutting down more Democratic voters than repub voters.)

(10,437 posts)after the kids are back in school. Our district is home to several state universities and community colleges as well as a number of private colleges. Well over 120,000 kids 18-21. Our candidates race has gone from likely GOP to lean GOP and the limited polling shows it's a tie at the moment. The enthusiasm is all on the democratic side as we will flip this seat and several others in Illinois.

(56,828 posts)In 2012, there were around 150 million registered voters. By 2016, the number had surged to around 200 million.
However, the actual votes cast increased by a very small amount, from 129.1 million to 137.1 million.
So, a 50 million increase in registered voters, but only an 8 million increase in turnout.

(30,740 posts)Young voters are notorious for only voting when there is an issue or candidate they care about. They don't understand that it is important to vote in every election.
I try to GOTV. But I am not going to kowtow to them every election, any more than I am going to kowtow to white male working class voters.
