Americans can legally download 3-D printed guns starting next month

(CNN) - Gun-rights activists have reached a settlement with the government that will allow them to post 3-D printable gun plans online starting August 1.

The settlement ends a multi-year legal battle that started when Cody Wilson, who describes himself as a post-left anarchist, posted plans for a 3-D printed handgun he called "The Liberator" in 2013.

The single-shot pistol was made almost entirely out of of ABS plastic -- the same stuff they make Lego bricks out of -- that could be made on a 3-D printer. The only metal parts were the firing pin and a piece of metal included to comply with the Undetectable Firearms Act.

The US State Department told Wilson and his non-profit group Defense Distributed to take down the plans. It said the plans could violate International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR), which regulate the export of defense materials, services and technical data.

Apparently, 3D guns are only legal if the have a metal plate for detection. We need to review these gun laws because gunners won't be satisfied with one-shooters, so they'll explore more lethal printed weapons. One-shooters just aren't lethal enough to get them off, for lack of a better phrase.

No fucking more.. Between our Country's love for guns, the increased number of homophobic, misogynistic,
Xenophobic, racists..I'm glad that I'm not 25..

But hear this...!!! If you're young, I'm gonna fight like hell, to rid ourselves of this extreme right wing mess.
I'm not going down w/o a fight!

I think todays development that it will now be legal to print single bullet guns.
Has driven me off the edge.

Anyone else feeling the same?

Several ebay listings for a this basic type of kit printer (a few bucks over $100 with "make offer" that they'd probably take $100 on).

https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_nkw=3d+printer+kit&_sacat=0&LH_FS=1&_udlo=100&_udhi=110&LH_BIN=1&_sop=15

Videos from some people that have one of the $100 varients:

The best printer under $200 is considered to be the Creality Ender 3 - $ 190 delivered from US warehouse:

(there are many youtube reviews including a couple of people completely assembling one).

3D printed guns aren't used for crimes of opportunity. Relatively speaking, they will never comprise more than the tiniest of fractions of the gun population out there. Criminals will continue to use cheap, stolen weapons. This doesn't add risk.

My point still stands, I'd much rather be shot at by a poorly made 1 shot plastic gun then any firearm going back to the late 1800's.

Is just a great big "Fuck You" to the advocates of Gun Control.

They are trying to prove that if you can print a gun, all Gun Control is useless, and shouldn't even be attempted.

I say "Fuck You" to people with that mindset. It's way past time for major Gun Control in this country.

Here in the US anyone who wants a gun is going to get a real one and with 300+ million in circulation that will probably be the case for the next 30-40 years regardless of what laws are passed so I don't really see this fundamentally changing anything here. In Europe or other places with strict laws this could be a problem.

We’re talkin’ zip guns here, and if you think the gangs aren’t going to make files to print zip guns that look like e-cigs or something...think again.

And yes, it would be better to be shot at from a distance with a printed gun than a factory-made one...but no one’s going to use them that way. It’ll be more likely someone would walk up to you and stick the thing in your belly.

Now...what’ll be entertaining is the reaction of the far right when people start using printed guns to mug them of their manufactured guns. “How could they ever do this to us?” Well,,,because you wanted it that way. If anyone can get a gun without a scrap of paper standing in their way, eventually all the people you don’t want to have guns will get them.

If these gangs want easily concealable guns, then they already have connections that can provide them with far more reliable firearms. The same goes for terrorists and other such organized bad folks. The larger risk is some kid or an idiot trying to print a gun and then blowing his/her fingers off in the process. I don't think anyone is going to go out and buy a 3D printer just because they want a gun that they can shoot people with. People who already have 3D printers and want to screw around with 3D guns will be the majority.

Although, I could also see a problem with the neighborhood idiot or maybe a high school kid who has a printer trying to make these and then selling them to others. I'm not really sure how you can prevent that, though. People can make their own models to print, or even find them on the internet (legal or not) The only real way to prevent it would be to make 3D printers illegal. Not sure that's a route most people want to go down. We'd also have to make desktop CNC machines illegal, because those too allow people to create dangerous devices. I suppose draconian laws against 3D printers or even homemade firearms of any sort may be a solution, but prohibition rarely works as planned. In fact, it often times seems to have the opposite effect.
