(Reuters) - A U.S. judge on Thursday ordered another extension of a temporary assistance program for hundreds of Puerto Rico families who fled the hurricane-ravaged island in 2017 and are living in hotels across the United States.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency announced in May that the program to assist families displaced by last years Hurricane Maria would end on June 30.
Thursdays extension of the program is the second issued by the federal judge presiding over the case.
Eight Puerto Ricans, most of whom are in Massachusetts, filed a proposed class action lawsuit that contends FEMAs actions would violate their due process rights under the U.S. Constitution.

(11,513 posts)I appalled by this, we have done less than the bare minimum to help the people of Puerto Rico. As far as the repubs are concerned it's 'out of sight out of mind'. And IMO the media has badly dropped the ball on this.

(22,005 posts)I've talked to a few people from Puerto Rico in the last couple months. They were stuck here on the main land looking for work, while their families on the island had to ride out the storm. One gentleman's father survived the hurricane, but died of a heart attack soon after because of the stress.
