Disney fires James Gunn from 'Guardians of the Galaxy' after old tweets unearthed by Cernovich
Source: The Hill
Director James Gunn has been fired from the upcoming movie sequel "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3" after old tweets containing offensive jokes about pedophilia and rape were unearthed by far-right activists.
Disney confirmed Gunn's firing in a statement Friday.
"The offensive attitudes and statements discovered on James' Twitter feed are indefensible and inconsistent with our studio's values, and we have severed our business relationship with him," Disney Studios Chairman Alan Horn told Variety.
Gunn's firing occurred just hours after messages from pundits Mike Cernovich and Jack Posobiec, -- who are known for pushing conspiracy theories, including about a murdered Democratic National Committee staffer -- went viral with images of old tweets from Gunn joking about pedophilia and other sexual crimes.

Disney rushes to judgment and caves to rape apologist, Pizzagate nut and Set Rich troofer "Weird Mike" Cernovich digging up 9-year-old facetious posts (which Gunn apologized for years ago) and distorting their context, handing the neo-nazi alt right another scalp and ruining a career.
Did they not learn anything from what MSNBC went through with the Seder smear? And now they've killed the creative direction of one of their most successful franchises.

Rape is not funny - EVER
Pedophilia is not funny - EVER
While I think Disney overreacted, I also think Gunn was a bonehead and I hope Mike Cernovich dies from steroid abuse.

Obviously a bad joke but just as obviously a joke, not an endorsement of child rape.
On edit.
By the end of the story the "boy" is an adult.

(16,858 posts)Gunn has been very honest about his past tweets when he viewed himself as a provocateur, and those tweets were current during the OME frame they hired him to write and direct the first GotG.

(16,858 posts)But if you're familiar with his career early on, outrageous, taboo, offensive stuff was his wheelhouse. Gunn has apologized for this in the past and says he's a different person, going so far as removing all the tweets. These are all PRIOR to Disney hiring him for GotG. For Disney to act shocked about them now is just not believable to me, they had to have known about the tweets.

Peter: What? Why? Its to get our wives back together.
Cleveland: Peter, these are hundreds of naked babies in suggestive situations. And their time stamped as far back as 1998, which is way before we had this idea.

(12,650 posts)And he hasn't posted any BS "edgy" crap since 2011. He fully acknowledged back then that what he had put out in public was unacceptable and stupidly hurtful to people who actually had been harmed in similar situations and apologized, never doing anything like that again. He grew the f*** up.
Unlike Roseanne Barr, who continues to be her old bad self even now.
And that's how Disney f'd up.
They let a proudly self-proclaimed a-hole who regularly says worse in public on a regular basis - who has a hard-on for "kicking hippies and lib'ruls" - use their organization to punish a director who he personally had a political beef with.
Do we acquies to digging up everyone's high school or college years to hunt down any mean, putrid attempts at "edgy adult humor" someone may have uttered just to destroy political "enemies"? I know "s/he should never had said that" but everyone is guilty of saying potentially hurtful things or snark. Except, of course, for Ned Flanders.

(9,139 posts)We may not, but corporations are, for the most part, interested only in earnings. So yeah, they will fire you for past egregious public statements, no matter who brought them back into the limelight, or for what purpose.
With these tweets out there, Gunn was on borrowed time with Disney to begin with.
He'll be fine. He has a seven-figure net worth, and now he can go back to being the edge lord he's wanted to be deep down during his ride with The Mouse.
