Rev. Robert Jeffress Defends Trump Amid Tape Chaos: We Also Supported 'Known Womanizer' Ronald Reaga

On Friday night, pro-Trump Rev. Robert Jeffress defended the president amid controversy of a tape that documented a conversation between Donald Trump and his personal lawyer Michael Cohen regarding a payoff to a former Playboy model during the election.
In the report from The New York Times, Rudy Giuliani confirmed the existence of a tape that that has Trump and Cohen discussing the form of payment that was to be made to Karen McDougal, who alleges she had an affair with the president back in 2006.
The Fox News contributor began by dismissing remarks made by an anti-Trump reverend who insisted that congressional leaders have sold their souls in order to make deals with this president.
This is not an unusual thing. Weve been here before, Jeffress told Fox News Ed Henry. Back in 1980, evangelicals chose to support a twice-married Hollywood actor who was a known womanizer in Hollywood. His name was Ronald Reagan. They chose to support him over Jimmy Carter, with a born-again Baptist Sunday school teacher who had been faithfully married to one woman. The reason we supported President Reagan was not because we supporting womanizing or divorce. We supported his policies. And thats true here, Ed. We are choosing to support his policies. Were not under any illusion that we were voting for an altar boy when we voted for President Trump. We knew about his past. And by the way, none of us has a perfect past. We voted for him because of his policies.

So that's how Baby Trump rose up into the sky.

(53 posts)Might deserve some looking into if this is meant to be a distraction, even if it remains perfectly valid as an article of news. Interesting choice to release something damaging to disrupt the conversation over the weekend that the nation inevitably will have about capital T Treason.

SELENE WALTERS SAYS: Kelleys account of his late-night visit is essentially accurate, although he never forced his way into her apartment. I opened the door. Then it was the battle of the couch. I was fighting him. I didnt want him to make love to me. Hes a very big man, and he just had his way. Date rape? No, God, no, thats [Kelleys] phrase. I didnt have a chance to have a date with him.

(37,648 posts)Just like any other single man. Jimmy Stewart would say of his days before marriage that he enjoyed himself.
To me, womanizing is something wolf-like. Using women and throwing them away w/o regard. That's not what Reagan or Stewart did, that I know of. They just dated, went to parties, lived the good life. They were NOT like Trump, and any attempt to equate the two is false, to my knowledge.

And he wasn't a "womanizer." When he was single, he had a good time, as most single people do. That's not "womanizing," a-hole.

(32,531 posts)Divorce and remarrying was the Christian rights' big bug-a-boo. Of course if you read the words of Christ(check your Red Letter Bible) Jesus never said a word about gay marriage or abortion, but he did say a lot about divorce and remarrying. So, it looks like they can ignore scripture they don't like in the moment and come up with something new to judge others. Reagan, not only divorced and remarried, he signed the first No Fault Divorce law in the country for California. Some of us are old enough to remember the change.

Reverend Jeffress, do you know what the Bible says about liars. This lapsed Baptist does:
Revelation 21:8: But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.

(1,639 posts)Some things are generally known by many people but are not reported on the news in a specifically public form of communication.
Former Maryland Governor, Martin O'Malley, is "known" by many in political and media circles as a "dog" vis a vis his private life. However, that aspect of his character has not been made public in any media format, print or otherwise. From my point of view, it has no bearing on his public service. Furthermore, I appreciate the fact that he is not a self-righteous, moralizing would-be despot trying to control other people's private lives.
Hugely popular former Maryland Senator, Barbara Mikulski, is "known" for being in a partnership relationship with a woman. This point has never been splashed along a headline in paper or binary code.
Another point, Regan was the practically a messiah to the self-described, "Moral Majority" of his era, despite being divorced. Adlai Stevenson II, however, was a divorced Democrat whose "dissolved marriage" caused many to question whether he could "hold the country together". Of course, he was also known to be smart and a thoughtful public speaker. With those qualities working against him, he could have been an actual, former altar boy and still, the fine Christians of America would not have voted for him.
Speaking of messiahs, if Jesus-- as described in the Gospels--were running for office today, about 70% of what he had to say would outrage the majority of Evangelical Christians in this country.(The other 30% would probably offend many Liberals who aren't as well versed on his public statements as they think they are.)
