Rubio warns of possible civil war in Nicaragua

Source: Politico

By ELI OKUN 07/22/2018 10:50 AM EDT

Sen. Marco Rubio on Sunday blasted the Nicaraguan government for its lethal crackdown on protests, cautioning that “the possibility of a civil war in Nicaragua is real.”

The Florida Republican said on CNN’s “State of the Union” that an escalation of the country’s months-long crisis “would trigger a migratory crisis. It would undermine our anti-drug efforts in the region. There is a direct national security interest for the United States in seeing democracy and stability in Nicaragua.”

Tens of thousands of protesters have convulsed the Central American nation since April. Led by students, protests have railed against social security overhauls and President Daniel Ortega’s increasingly authoritarian rule. Nearly 300 people have died. The U.N. warned last week of human rights violations by the paramilitary forces Ortega has used against protesters.

The onetime leftist Sandinista revolutionary led Nicaragua in the 1980s after the toppling of the U.S.-backed Somoza dictatorship. Since returning to power in 2007, Ortega has consolidated power, done away with term limits and elevated his widely reviled wife, Rosario Murillo, to the vice presidency as a possible successor.

The Somoza-era narcos want Nicaragua back, and Little Marco wants the U.S. taxpayer to help get it for them.

... that Nicaragua and Cuba would be the stepping stones to the Soviet domination of the region, and ultimately the launching points of a communist invasion of the USA.

Ten minutes later "librul" Hollywood released the movie Red Dawn that featured Cuban, Nicaraguan, and Soviet troops invading the USA.

... Democrats(?) who only bully participants in the discussion.
IMO, the LatAm forum has been dominated by intolerance and extremism, and a conservatism not fitting for DU. My opinion.

Don't let them discourage you, Mike. Don't let them get their way.

Besides, Gato Gordo isn't such a bad guy; he just has his opinions, that's all. Like the rest of us.

Keep in mind also that he has family in Venezuela, and that, whoever's to blame for this crisis they're in, they're probably having a difficult time right now. I have family in Argentina, and can definitely relate (as you may have heard this Macrisis of theirs is hitting hard, while Macri and his friends are making off like bandits - just as the dictatorship did in the early '80s).

And don't forget Judi Lynn, who's I've always found a pleasure to discuss things with, or just to chat with if that's all one's in the mood for.

Above all it's good hearing from again; let's keep in touch.

I know of what I speak. My family has seen all the hardships imaginable. Nonetheless, they love their country.
I feel no sympathy for the abusers in that forum BECAUSE of their vitriol against those who've experienced much of the same as their families in Latin America but who have a different opinion.
Opinions are fine. Discussion is fine. The abuse by the aforementioned GG is unacceptable, imo.
Most of the great well informed and prolific posters have been chased away or juried out by certain groups of RW posters there. Not much to learn there for me anymore.

Nice to tty.

There's no excuse for bullying tactics - whatever one's personal story might be.

Do please keep us up to date on Cuban affairs - or anything else that comes to your attention. Always good to have people of passion on this site, and especially someone with personal knowledge of the subject at hand.

¡Saludos!

5. During the US-designed Contra war against Nicaragua during Reagan, they feared "commies."

The propaganda flood, choreograhed and organized by Otto Reich in Reagan's Office of Public Diplomacy illegally accused the Nicaraguan poor which had been terrorized, tortured, and murdered under decades of Somoza and sons with total US support, of being a threat to the West due to its terrifying commie tendencies.

Now the same people or their progeny, running the mass perception mills in the US are accusing the same masses of Nicaraguans of supporting "authoritianism" since they can no longer accuse them of supporting "communism" since St. Ronald Grade-B Movie Star officially "killed" communism and made the world safe again.

Now, under Trump's ulcerous eye, the propaganda machine starts accusing Nicaraguans of supporting "authoritarianism." Holy Moly, shiver me timbers. That's even worse, except for the US and Donald Trump. Those grandchildren of Nicaraguan "commie lovers" will be crawling along the ground, in the dark, toward the US border with machetes in their teeth, to substitute their authoritarian for our authoritarian.
