Brazil Far Right Politician Enters Presidential Race

Source: BBC News

A controversial far-right politician, Jair Bolsonaro, has formally declared that he is running in Brazil's presidential election in October.

The former army officer is currently in second place in the polls behind ex-President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.

But Lula is serving a prison sentence for corruption and is unlikely to run.

Mr Bolsonaro has outraged many in Brazil with racist and homophobic comments. But his backers see him as a saviour in a crime-ridden country.

'Brazilian Trump' Mr Bolsonaro, 63, declared himself a candidate to about 3,000 cheering supporters at a rally in Rio de Janeiro...more..

Jair Bolsonaro, "Brazilian Trump" declared his candidacy to his cheering supporters at a rally in Rio de Janeiro.

The candidate, who advocates loosening the country's gun control laws to deal with crime, is also backed by millions of evangelical Christians for his uncompromising anti-abortion stand.

When he voted to impeach President Dilma Rousseff, he dedicated his vote to the colonel who tortured her in the '70s.

I'm sure you've heard. No proof of any kind - just hearsay from a convicted criminal who was threatened with being thrown into a maximum security hellhole if he didn't sing their tune.

Having pretty much exhausted appeals (habeas corpus motions were denied over 140 times), Lula's party is apparently now considering endorsing Ciro Gomes instead.

Gomes, who served in Lula's cabinet a decade ago, will probably receive Lula's personal endorsement from jail - and if so, would probably win.

Temer, however, could still have Gomes assassinated though - a very real possibility in today's Brazil.

And yes, there may end up being too many candidates splitting the progressive vote in Brazil for their own good - which is exactly what Temer the dictator wants.

Lula was the only candidate who could count on coaslecing the progressive vote behind a single ticket. That's why he had to be taken out of the running.

The same thing's happening in Argentina, where the far-right Macri regime is so underwater in its approval ratings (around 30%), that he's thinking of fielding Governor María "Heidi" Vidal instead.

With a scenario like that - not to mention a brewing campaign money laundering scandal and the Bush-style financial crisis they're going through - you'd think the ruling party would have no chance.

But with the opposition divided into four or more factions that can't find common ground despite agreeing on almost everything, the outcome is still uncertain. The problem? Egos. Too much 'me', and not enough 'we'.

That's a major advantage the far right always seems to have on progressives: they know how to march in step.

Or goose step, if you will.

From the Guardian:

Brazilian congressman ordered to pay compensation over rape remark
Jair Bolsonaro said Maria do Rosario was not ‘worth raping; she is very ugly’
Congressman must pay $2,500 for remarks about fellow member in interview

AP in São Paulo

Fri 18 Sep 2015 13.03 EDT Last modified on Fri 18 Sep 2015 13.34 EDT

A Brazilian judge has ordered a conservative Brazilian congressman to pay a colleague more than $2,500 for saying she wasn’t worth raping.

Judge Tatiana Dias da Silva ordered Jair Bolsonaro to pay Maria do Rosario 10,000 reals ($2,560) for saying last December in a newspaper interview that she is not “worth raping; she is very ugly”.

One day before the interview, Bolsonaro said on the floor of congress that Rosario had called him a “rapist” in 2003, adding that he would not rape her because she didn’t “deserve it”.

Lawmakers in Brazil enjoy parliamentary immunity, which protects their speech, opinions and votes in congress. However, Judge Silva said the immunity would not apply to Bolsonaro because he made similar remarks later in the interview.

Political opponent,
Maria do Rosário,
was declared to be
too ugly to be raped,
must be the cheaters
that spoil her for the
racist fascist Bolsonario.

Glasses might help
Bolsonaro look
more like an
intelligent person.
Can always hope.

Bolsonaro bothering Maria do Rosário.

Jair Bolsonaro loves to try to look tough.

Needs to wave his hand guns around a lot.
