Brett Kavanaugh will meet with Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) next week, signaling the Supreme Court nominee is beginning to woo Democrats in his confirmation bid.
Kavanaugh will meet with Manchin next Monday, according to a Manchin aide. Manchin is considered one of the Democrats most likely to back Kavanaugh, along with Sens. Heidi Heitkamp of North Dakota and Joe Donnelly of Indiana. Those three red-state Democrats voted to confirm Supreme Court Justice Neil Gorsuch last year.
Several other moderate Democrats are also angling to meet with Kavanaugh, even though Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer has yet to meet with the nominee. A Heitkamp aide said she is working to set up a meeting with Kavanaugh but it hasnt been finalized.
Typically rank and file members have waited for the party leader to secure a meeting with a Supreme Court nominee, though Schumer is already vowing to try to defeat Kavanaugh.

(4,233 posts)for voting with the Republicans. Should we take back the Senate, they'll do a 180 when they find him voting with the Democrats. Or they could expect him to keep with their "interests" (whatever they think a Democrat is supposed to stand for, overall) and punish him. I can't keep up with the gymnastics. I have no idea what red states expect from their Democratic reps.

(6,251 posts)Manchin, a Democrat, who said he would meet with Kavanaugh within the next two weeks, held the roundtable discussion with about 25 local political activists and attorneys to solicit opinions on and questions for the president's nominee.

Jon Mani, a Charleston attorney, told Manchin he was concerned about Kavanaughs argument in a 2011 Minnesota Law Review article that sitting presidents should not be subject to prosecution while in office.
You look at his writings, his opinions, hes very very behind almost, an imperial executive theory, Mani said. The president is exempt from lawsuits while in office. Cant be indicted while in office. This is terrifying, he added.
Weve heard a lot about that, Manchin said, pledging that his legal advisors were gathering all the information they could about Kavanaughs views on the topic and that he was sure to ask him about it.
Manchin is also asking West Virginians for their opinions in an online poll -- https://www.manchin.senate.gov/tell-joe-about-the-supreme-court-of-the-united-states
I had a chance to speak with one of Manchin's staff last week. He said that they are getting tons of phone calls, and many, many of them are concerned with Kavanaugh's take on preexisting conditions specifically and the ACA in general.
