Ivanka Trump shuts down her namesake clothing brand, which became politicized during the presidential campaign

By Washington Post Staff
July 24 at 1:31 PM

The first daughter said in a statement that her focus is on her "work in Washington." The fashion brand was founded in 2014 and later became politicized for offshore manufacturing and working conditions.

This is a developing story. It will be updated.

Ivanka Trump's clothing brand is shutting down.

The president's daughter and White House senior advisor said her "focus for the foreseeable future will be the work I am doing here in Washington" and called the company's closure "the only fair outcome for my team and partners."

The company, based in New York's Trump Tower, had been dropped by retailers such as Nordstrom due to flagging sales. Its dresses, shoes and handbags -- all of which were made in foreign countries such as China and Indonesia -- also conflicted with her push of more jobs in the U.S.

The closure comes as a surprise even within the company, where officials had been discussing implementing long-delayed oversight of its foreign factory partners as recently as last week.

Company chief Abigail Klem said last year she had been planning her first trip to tour some of the facilities that make Ivanka Trump products, and said the company would boost oversight of the treatment of its largely female workforce. The company never shared details of those initiatives.

Her brand of affordable fashion for young, professional women became a polarizing political statement, bought in solidarity by Trump supporters and boycotted vigorously by liberals.

Ivanka Trump Closing Her Namesake Fashion Brand

Ivanka Trump, President Donald Trump’s daughter, is closing her namesake fashion brand, more than a year after she formally separated herself from the company and entered the White House as a senior adviser.

Apparel sales at the brand, which Ms. Trump launched in its current form in 2014, soared in the year of the 2016 presidential election. But the company also became a lightning rod for critics of her father’s policies, with one anti-Trump group last year urging shoppers to boycott stores selling Trump-branded goods. Retailers including Nordstrom Inc. and Hudson’s Bay have stopped selling Ivanka Trump products in the past 18 months, citing their performance.

Abigail Klem, who took over as president of the brand last spring, informed its 18 employees Tuesday that the company would be shutting down. Ms. Trump is set to address the staff later in the day.

Ms. Trump had contemplated the move in recent months as she grew frustrated by the restrictions she placed on the company, IT Collection LLC, to avoid possible conflicts of interest while serving in the White House.

Marshall’s, Ross and T.J. Maxx carry her brands FYI.

She should have sold off the business BEFORE her asshole father took office, not 17 months after the fact. I hope she took a financial bath on it.

BTW, she re-branded much of her line under the name "Adrienne Vittadini." If you see products under this label continuing to be sold, know that this is all another big, fat lie.

It was only a couple of months ago. They're all such liars that you can't believe anything any one of then say.

But as someone upthread has already said, make no mistake about it. They have designs on her running for President. I've heard it from a female trump supporter that I only know casually. (That's my disclaimer because I'd never be friendly with a trump supporter.)
