Henry Kissinger suggested to President Donald Trump that the United States should work with Russia to contain a rising China.
The former secretary of statewho famously engineered the tactic of establishing diplomatic relations with China in order to isolate the Soviet Unionpitched almost the inverse of that idea to Trump during a series of private meetings during the presidential transition, five people familiar with the matter told The Daily Beast. The potential strategy would use closer relations with Russia, along with other countries in the region, to box in Chinas growing power and influence.
Kissinger also pitched the idea to Jared Kushner, the top White House adviser whose portfolio includes foreign-policy matters, one of the sources briefed on the discussions said.
Inside the administration, the proposal has found receptive ears, with some of Trumps top advisersin addition to officials in the State Department, Pentagon, and the National Security Councilalso floating a strategy of using closer relations with Moscow to contain Beijing, according to White House and Capitol Hill insiders. But the idea has been complicated by the presidents deference to Russian President Vladimir Putin, which has caused countless domestic political headaches.

(16,423 posts)Both are vying for control over the ex-soviet states in Inner Eurasia.
Russia wants them to join an economic union, inevitably ruled by Russia even though everybody would be equal on paper.
(Putin wants to create something similar to the Eurozone in the long term, but these countries don't want to place themselves at the mercy of an international currency that would effectively be controlled by the Kremlin.)
At the same, China wants to establish a new Silk-Road, a state-of-the-art highway that would run from China to the Middle-East. This would create a new axis of trade, effectively dominated by chinese goods and chinese economic pressure.

(7,299 posts)Before his time in the Nixon Administration, Kissinger held a position at Harvard. He was so arrogant and temper ridden that most of his colleagues steered clear of him. Anyhow, at home he would not have contact with his wife for weeks. She was told to put his food tray outside his home office door. He would sleep on a couch in his home office. He would not shower for weeks and would not recognize his own wife for weeks at a time. That dude has always been nuts.

Narcissists elevate their feelings of self worth by the presumed status of the people with whom they associate, and Kissinger similarly has never been shy about telling the world how brilliant he is.

(11,014 posts)Henry is an evil, evil man. No wonder he took a liking to Trump. But I don't buy this 'let's blame Henry' tactic. Trumpco may have been looking for a 'legitimate' excuse to cover their Russian tracks. IMHO, the Russian thing started long before Henry.
Since we know that Henry was advising Trumpco, let's look at his role in family separation at the border for 'deterence'. We know how Henry feels about South America. It sounds like something he would recommend.
