A Six-Year Old Girl Was Sexually Abused in an Immigrant Detention Center
Source: The Nation
According to immigrant rights advocates, a six-year-old girl separated from her mother under the Trump administrations zero tolerance immigration policy was sexually abused while at an Arizona detention facility run by Southwest Key Programs. The child was then made to sign a form acknowledging that she was told to maintain her distance from her alleged abuser, who is an older child being held at the same detention facility.
The girl, who is only identified by the initials D.L., and her mother had been fleeing gang violence in their native Guatemala. According to the family, the pair entered the United States at a point of entry in El Paso, Texas, on May 24, where they presented border patrol authorities with paperwork claiming that they had credible fear that returning to Guatemala would result in harm. On May 26, government officials separated D.L. from her mother and sent her to Casa Glendale, a shelter outside of Phoenix operated by Southwest Key Programs. It was there that the alleged abuse occurred.
Before D.L. was taken away, her mother provided authorities with the phone number of D.L.s father, an undocumented immigrant living in California. On June 11, D.L.s father received a phone call from Southwest Key explaining that a boy had fondled his daughter and other girls. According to family spokesperson Mark Lane, D.L.s father was told not to worry because Southwest Key was changing some of its protocols and that such abuse would not happen again. (Lane was connected with D.L.s family through Families Belong Together, a coalition of civil rights advocacy groups formed in response to the recent border crackdown.) Lane says that D.L.s father asked to speak with a social worker, but despite promises from the facility, he never heard from one.
A Southwest Key Programs document obtained by The Nation confirms that D.L. was reported to have been sexually abused on June 4, 2018. On June 12, one day after D.L.s father was contacted, the six-year old girl was presented with the form stating that, as part of the facilitys intervention protocol, she had been instructed to maintain my distance from the other youth involved and had been provided psychoeducation, described in the document as reporting abuse and good touch bad touch. The form, posted below, shows D.Ls signaturea single letter D, next to the characterization of her as tender agewhich supposedly confirms that D.L understands that it is my responsibility to follow the safety plan reviewed with her.

(6,831 posts)I believe that when the book about this is written, we will be speechless.
I am still shocked that this entire nation didn't come to a screeching halt when this child abduction began. They were taking infants from mothers who were still breastfeeding. Who in the blue fuck does that ? What have we become ?
If another country had done this to American children, we would have nuked them back to the pre-Cambrian era by noon the next day.
I screamed and raged through two weeks at the beginning of this. How could we have allowed this to be done in our names ? If we had taken to the streets en masse, I think we could have stopped this immediately and I am ashamed of America for not doing just that.
We will bear the shame of this for decades to come.

(44,962 posts)My point is, people start talking about pedophilia and adults applying to these places in order to have access to the children, and that's not what happened in this case. Obviously it's a problem when children of different ages and genders are all put in the same place. Which shouldn't have happened to begin with.

Separated from her mother, placed in an institution under chaotic circumstances, alone and likely afraid. SIX YEARS OLD. And the responsibility is PLACED ON HER.

(89,182 posts)look at refugee camps and other similar situations. there is always sexual abuse. in some cases there are no alternatives because of war zones and kids without parents.
but in this case it's purposely putting kids in a much more dangerous situation by taking them away from parents.

(6,831 posts)It doesn't matter WHO did it. These children were illegally-abducted from their parents. There is NOTHING in our laws that dictates this response. NOTHING. Had they not been separated, this would not have happened. Does anyone really think that this administration gave a shit about the welfare of these children ? They didn't even have a plan for re-uniting them, which makes me wonder just what in the hell they planned to do with these children -- auction them off ??? Sell them into slavery ??? Almost 700 have yet to be re-united with their parents.
This whole thing sickens me to my soul.

(6,831 posts)There was footage recently on the Internet of a drone that flew over Birkenau, Bergen Belsen and Auschwitz. I was stunned as I never realized how large those facilities were, how much land they covered. The video was spare of music and I think that only heightened the visual presentation. So vast. Rows of buildings that went on and on. Courtyards still strewn with barbed wire. I felt like a voyeur. I'll bet that if you stood there in the mist long enough you would hear the anguished torment of lost souls, the damage of the broken survivors and the whispers of the dead.
We must never ever allow this history to be forgotten or worse, re-written by those who deny its existence. And we must never allow the rise of those who would seek to begin to replicate it by their bombast and slippery rhetoric - trump are you listening ?
George Santayana said it so succinctly, "A nation that does not learn from its history is doomed to repeat it."
I cannot imagine the thoughts that must have passed through your mind when you were there.
Shalom.

(7,369 posts)I was ten. Stuck my head inside one of the ovens, then realized what the black stuff was.
When Eisenhower toured Gotha he was the sole man remaining by the end -- not even Patton could handle it, or any of the aides. Shortly after the tour Eisenhower began to plot the murder of the entire Wehrmacht General Staff. He was behind the scenes at the Nuremberg trial ceaselessly pushing for the harshest possible sentences. It became an obsession with him, and only the intercession of his aides and those who knew him well kept it from being made public until much later.
That stuff is real. This stuff is real. One way or the other they need to be made to stop.

(6,831 posts)I don't think I could have done that, especially alone.
Yes, I knew about Ike's loathing for the Nazis, and his deeply personal need to see them all punished. I have a small library of books on Eisenhower, because I admire him so. Few people know what a compassionate man he was, seeing him only as a war time general, but he HATED war. In some ways he foresaw so much of what the world has become, beginning with his warning about the "industrial military complex."
For the first eight years of my life he was president. In my child's mind, I thought he would be president forever. And I was good with that. I shudder to think of what he would think of what has happened to this nation he loved so much.
