Possible Gary Johnson Senate Bid Scrambles New Mexico Race

Source: Talking Points Memo/AP

By Russell Contreras Associated Press | July 28, 2018 10:39 am

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — Former Libertarian Party presidential candidate Gary Johnson is considering jumping into the race for the U.S. Senate in New Mexico, raising the profile of a race that Democrats seeking to capture the majority in Congress had seen as a safe seat.

Johnson consultant Ron Nielson told The Associated Press on Friday that the former governor is “strongly considering” running if Libertarian candidate Aubrey Dunn quits the race as expected.

“He is weighing it over right now,” Nielson said. “He doesn’t want to get into a race he can’t win.”

Aubrey Dunn’s son, attorney Blair Dunn, told the AP that his father was dropping out of the race and would release more details on Monday.

Most of us in New Mexico are tired of Johnson,
and he can run or not.

We don't care.

We have a very good candidate in Martin Heinrich.

If he gets the Libertarian nomination, Johnson may pull in a few votes from the GOP.
Johnson's a dork.

I didn't know how Johnson was perceived in NM. We all need to be united. Winner takes all. A third party candidate takes votes from one of the other parties. With Johnson it would hurt the repub candidate. Who really gets hurt is what to keep in mind when considering voting third party. Third party candidates can be spoilers.

The only way 'scrambled' would apply,
being Johnson's a cracked egg.

I always suspected TPM's main strategy for getting clicks is drama-ginning.

If they actually had anyone doing journalism they'd be talking about how pointless and futile a gesture this is.

Marty Heinrich is massively popular.

Mark Rich has the GOP weasel money but no name recognition.

Everyone except the very small minority of hard-core libertarian wackjobs regards Johnson as a joke.

Bright

votes from the Reputinkin, but not from Heimlich. Granted, Heimlich has pulled a couple of doozies, like voting against the measure that would have controlled the price of prescription drugs, but Billy The Kid could win this year if he were a Democrat!
