Georgia Jet Fuel Tax Halted, Months After NRA, Delta Squabble

Source: Atlanta CBS Local

ATLANTA (AP) — Georgia governor Nathan Deal made good on his vow to restore a tax cut on jet fuel sales that was previously killed by state GOP lawmakers irate with Delta Air Lines for ending a discount for members of the National Rifle Association.

Deal issued an executive order suspending collection of the state’s 4 percent sales tax on jet fuel beginning Aug. 1. The Georgia General Assembly could reinstate the tax when it reconvenes for the 2019 legislative session in January.

Earlier this year, Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle effectively killed a proposed sales tax exemption on jet fuel to punish Delta for ending a discount program for NRA members in the wake of the deadly school shootings in Parkland, Florida, in February.

The proposed exemption was included in a larger tax bill but was stripped by Cagle and the state Senate, capping what Deal referred to an “unbecoming squabble.”

This favoritism by the right wingnut NRA gun lobby should end. Delta doesn't owe them anything.

People want low fares but don't understand how expensive it is to run an airline. That fuel tax relief will help keep your air fare a little lower.

5. You're correct, of course. The exemption shouldn't be there in the first place.

Many, even here on DU, still fall for that "job creators" nonsense. This is just corporate welfare.

election nonsense, and Cagle so deserved to lose. Of course, the winner in the Republican runoff, Trump-endorsed Kemp, is worse. An inexperience, right-wing nincompoop ideologue.

Go, Stacey Abrams! Georgia really needs you.

dog whistles presented humorously but about as subtly as factory whistles. He was doing okay with them.

A morning show, Joe's I think, showed a graph of what happened to his support immediately when Trump endorsed him. Georgia Republicans turned a competitive showing into a vertical line that shot straight up far above Cagle.

If the Kemp campaign hadn't known Trump's aggressive racist nationalism was his path to glory before, he certainly does now.

Now we'll find out how Georgia's POC, other minorities, independents, and liberal voters who are accustomed to token voting just on principle react to this.

But don’t underestimate the number of OLD SOUTH COCKROACHES that these dark dark TRUMP times have stirred up & energized down here...It may not matter! I’ve lived here my entire life & unless you’re within the ATL city limits & few other smaller municipalities scattered out through the state the only difference between rural Georgians & those in Metro Atlanta is how talented they are at hiding their racist disdain for all minorities!

I know some of my fellow Southerners don’t like that description but it’s because it’s TRUE! …I will be happy, OVERJOYED even the day I’m proven wrong. Hey, hopefully it will be in November I’m going to do all I can but this is Georgia!

at different times who told me, perfectly nicely in chatting, that they felt it was really strange but they'd never met a liberal or, in the case of my husband, a Jew. I've often suspected that some of these people are liberal by nature but don't know it because of the overwhelmingly conservative society they've lived all their lives in.

For practical social purposes for me, locals tend to fall into two rough groups, those who will be friends, or at least associate, with us and those who will not. Overt racism is not considered acceptable among the vast majority of our acquaintances, but this division makes it clear enough which ones mean it and which are merely wearing it as a social mask because bigotry is considered bad style.

Delta buys a mind boggling amount of fuel in Georgia. Delta is perfectly capable of buying less fuel there if it becomes more expensive than buying it in other places.

Large airlines routinely “tanker” fuel around their route systems to maximize fuel savings depending on costs in different locations. The airplanes nearly always have extra room in their fuel tanks to do this. Yes, carrying extra fuel costs a little more in fuel burn, but even a small price difference can make it a money saver to do this.

And airlines do it all the time. If Georgia makes fuel more expensive for Delta, Delta WILL buy less fuel in Georgia. This means Georgia fuel suppliers sell less fuel and make less money. Delta uses a LOT of fuel.

This was just another Stupid Republican Trick. And it turned out exactly the way everyone predicted.
