GOP fears steep losses in state legislatures
Source: The Hill
LOS ANGELES Republicans hoping to hold on to their majorities in state legislative chambers across the country are nervously eying President Trumps anemic approval rating, concerned that a wave of voter anger could undo years of gains.
In interviews at the National Conference of State Legislators annual meetings last week, Republican leaders from purple and red states said they were worried that their members most of whom are little-known even inside their own districts are most vulnerable to an electoral atmosphere that even slightly benefits Democrats.
There is more Democratic enthusiasm than I have seen in the last few cycles. Thats a reality I cant ignore, said Robin Vos, the Republican speaker of the Wisconsin Assembly. Almost everybody has an opinion on national politics today. Even if youre totally uninformed, you still have an opinion.
After notching major gains in 2010 and 2014, when Republican waves cost President Obamas party about 1,000 state legislative seats across the country, Republicans control both legislative chambers in 31 states.

(16,785 posts)The voters are connecting them to Trump. Which is part of the reason Republicans are losing. They want better wages, Unions, Health Care, funded education, solid infrastructure, fair taxation shared by all income brackets, etc ...ALL the things Republicans want to TAKE AWAY with tax cuts for the rich.
Remember what Sam Brownback did to Kansas. BANKRUPTED the state and still was re-elected to a second term.

(22,670 posts)Imagine if 66 million democrats suddenly did what the 63 million traitors to our country did in 2016 and voted and supported the worst least qualified candidate possible, just out of spite. Then told them they had to live with the repercussions of that dangerous idiot candidate. Only that's still not as bad as the majority has it now, with this dangerous idiot.
So F-off conseЯvatives.

(4,425 posts)we are going to end up with even worse gerrymandering and a Koch sponsored constitutional convention.

(43,162 posts)Pennsylvania, the GOP have their salaries, perks and limousine rides, been doing this since about 1925 even when Democrats control a few things. Once they get entrenched in the bureaucracy, with a few elected judgeships, and all their relatives in the county law offices, they just recycle, regroup, and run again and seize power. Then you can't get rid of them.

(9,265 posts)"he helped Grandpa get his Veterans benefits...helped Junior get into West Point"..etc. Those personal favors add up. Also "he's such a nice reasonable guy..." who goes back to Harrisburg and votes in lockstep with the GOP. It's really hard to get rid of the state reps. I'll do my part.

(128,995 posts)All of these ALEC draconian POS laws have happened at the STATE level - "Voter ID", "Trans-vaginal Ultrasound", "Right to Work", "Proof of Citizenship", "Late-term abortion Bans", voter purges, closures of voting locations in counties where minorities reside, elimination of early voting or Sunday voting (in states that originally had that), gerrymandering, refusal to expand Medicaid, and of course they are now working on minority-area targeted "work requirements" for Medicaid.
We gotta claw the governorships and legislatures back - and especially ahead of the 2020 census.

(24,329 posts)We need to get control at the state level. Controlling legislatures, governor's offices and State Superintendent of Public Instruction

(14,750 posts)When they control 34 statehouses, they can call an article V constitutional convention, and literally rewrite any part of it they don't agree with. They've already stated it as their plan. With control of 38 statehouses they can pass any amendment written in a constitutional convention.
Slavery could quite literally return to state control. Woman could lose the right to vote. Forget minority rights. Forget lgbt rights. A national religion could be established. A national language would be a sure thing.
Their delegates would be the whacko's even among their own ranks, and industry money would flood in.. They would be a majority.
There are no rules restricting what they can do, and it only requires their votes to enact a change.
Yes, statehouse control is important. It's why the kooks have been promoting local candidates at low levels like planning boards and school committees. It provides a feeder system of candidates.

(5,443 posts)They spent big bucks to take local governments under their "wing." How are they going to gerrymander or have a constitutional convention if they lose control of the state legislatures?
