Rep. Chris Collins, one of President Donald Trump's earliest backers in Congress, suspended his campaign on Saturday, in the wake of insider trading allegations that resulted in his dramatic arrest this week.
In a statement, the New York Republican who represents the state's 27th Congressional district said that "after extensive discussions with my family and my friends over the last few days, I have decided that it is in the best interests of the constituents of NY-27, the Republican Party and President Trump's agenda for me to suspend my campaign for re-election to Congress."

His friends and family told him he was toast.
The GOP is running scared. They're afraid of a blue wave.
Good.

(129,146 posts)as usual it signified nothing.
I would have expected that his lawyer(s) showed him how open and shut the case was and that it would be foolish to just toss it off. Could be the lawyers are going to try to get a plea agreement since (I think) his future mother-in-law and future daughter-in-law did plea deals.

Republican Rep. Chris Collins said in a statement Saturday morning that his decision was in the best interest of his constituents, the GOP and President Trumps agenda.
Earlier this week he called the multiple charges meritless and said he would remain on the ballot.
This is a developing story. It will be updated.

(43,197 posts)to solve the financial crisis and found out he had no idea what to do. The suspense is palpable, when does the campaign un-suspend itself? Because these bozos use this as political ju-jitzu to garner sympathy from their party, then they rejoin the race! If he really cared about his party, he would just end - END - his campaign and resign!

(32,656 posts)I don't think he's hurting for money. Theoretically he should return all the campaign contributions he received to the original donors. The money that can't be returned will probably be given to the NY Republican Party. That's my guess but I don't really know.
Collins is done, there's no career left for this guy. He'll go to prison, and hopefully do something useful. Martha Stewart survived, but she was only in for less than a year. Collins could teach federal prisoners how to invest in the stock market.
