Trump gears up to strip more clearances from officials tied to Russia investigation
August 16 at 7:27 PM
President Trump has told advisers that he is eager to strip more security clearances as part of an escalating attack against people who have criticized him or played a role in the investigation of alleged Russian interference in the 2016 presidential campaign, two White House officials said.
Over the past 19 months, Trump has fired or threatened to take action against nearly a dozen current and former officials associated with the inquiry, which he has labeled a rigged witch hunt, including former FBI director James B. Comey, former deputy attorney general Sally Yates and former FBI deputy director Andrew McCabe. All three were dismissed.
Trump intensified his attacks this week by stripping former CIA director John Brennan of his security clearance and announcing that others are under review. Brennan and former director of national intelligence James R. Clapper Jr., who is on Trumps review list, were among the Obama administration officials who briefed Trump before his inauguration on evidence of Russias interference in the campaign.

To critics, Trumps moves echo President Richard Nixons decision to force the abrupt firing of Watergate special counsel Archibald Cox.
If you did all this in one day, it would have a Saturday night massacre odor to it, said Benjamin Wittes, a Brookings Institution fellow who oversees the Lawfare Blog on national security issues, referring to the 1973 move by Nixon that prompted resignations by the Justice Departments top two officials. But you spread it out and get people used to the first one, then you do the second one over a long period of time, it becomes the new normal.

(50,560 posts)Those of us who have served in the IC, and those who still serve, have a much more productive and direct way of dealing with this problem.
There's no need to torture Trump. Considering his sexual proclivities, he might enjoy it.
The way to go to totally neuter and humiliate this sorry individual is to prepare all his intelligence briefings using nothing more than information from the Washington Post and the New York Times - what we call "open source collateral." Put nothing classified in his briefings.
When he starts screaming about wanting classified information in his briefings, simply recite this mantra: "Sir, that information is handled and distributed on a need-to-know basis based on the trustworthiness of the recipient." The implication is clear: We worked damn hard on this information, and if you think we're going to give it to someone like you who'll tweet it out for the hell of it, you're dumber than you look.

(7,947 posts)We all sort of fall back a bit in the face of that sort of arrogance.
"I can fire whomever I want! I can do whatever I want. If the president does it, it's legal."
When Nixon said that, it was seen as more sign of his guilt.
Trump says it, and we wring our hands with futility.
Of course, we're outraged. But seriously, at what point do the Republicans kind of start feeling a bit negative about this? McCain is the only one, and Flake, and McCain can't be in DC, and Flake isn't very strong.
Does the GOP establishment actually think it's fine that he's kneecapping law enforcement? Obstructing justice? Exploding the deficit? They used to care about the deficit at least!
I really don't understand. I used to think I disagree with the GOP, but I never thought that most of them didn't care about the country. But what can we conclude but... they really don't care about the country?
Because Trump thinks he can get away with everything, he IS getting away with everything.

I am heartened by the increasing push back by media, law enforcement personnel, retired military, etc. People are stepping up at an every increasing rate. Resist. Persist, GOTV!

Kushner is working with Manafort to help Manafort install a banker who bought Manafort via a $16 mil loan.
Why does this dishonest idiot Kushner get to keep his National Security clearance while the president tries to smear an honorable public servant like John Brennan ?
Rhetorical question but it is still hard to stomach this garbage

(19,204 posts)On those amendments he "remembered" over 100 meetings with foreign leaders he neglected to report on his security clearance papers. One of those was a meeting with Sergey Kislyak shortly before the election, oh, and a Russian banker who was purportedly going to loan Kushner money for his 666 Park Ave. boondoggle. He and Ivanka had to amend their income and assets on their financial disclosure several times as well, because they kept "finding" assets they neglected to report (including the Kushners' art collection valued at over $3 million).
Little things like that, you know? Yet Jared and Ivanka both have top security clearances, where as anyone else who failed to report so many glaring items on both their security clearance application, and their financial disclosure would certainly have been denied any security clearance whatsoever (and other people have been rejected for a lot less!).
But the Trumps are all "special". They're all above the law and any petty security questions put in place to protect our nation and it's secrets don't apply to anyone named 'Trump'. Rules and laws are put in place to keep Democrats from having an easy time giving away our nation's crown jewels.
But Brennan's a security risk, right Little Donnie?
I want Trump's blood pressure to go off the scale. I want him to have a debilitating stroke, so that all of the vain bullshit that holds this man together is totally destroyed. I want his right side to be paralyzed, his face drooping and drooling from his mouth. I want "Don-Juan" Trump to be a hideous monster that no woman, for any amount of money, would ever go near. I've never wished anything close to this on anyone in my entire life. I can't ever remember wishing harm on anyone, ever. But all of these things, and more, I wish for Donald Trump. It would be a fitting end for someone so empty, so mean, so vindictive, so vain, and someone with such a false sense of superiority. For you, Donald J. Trump: These are the things I wish for YOU! I know by doing this I open myself up to same criticism heaped upon Trump, about being vindictive and mean. Just this once.....just this once. Trump does it every waking moment of his life.
