'Silent Sam' is down: Protesters topple Confederate statue on UNC campus

Source: WRAL

Chapel Hill, N.C. — Protesters on Monday night toppled the controversial "Silent Sam" statue on the campus of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

More than 300 protesters first gathered at the Peace and Justice Plaza at about 7 p.m., before marching to the base of the statue, calling for its removal. By 9:30 p.m., the statue was on the ground and the crowd was cheering.

"Silent Sam" had been standing on the UNC campus since 1913.

Gov. Roy Cooper issued a statement Monday night, saying that he "understands that many people are frustrated by the pace of change and he shares their frustration, but violent destruction of public property has no place in our communities."

"...VIOLENT destruction of public property..."

This hyperbole is a wink-wink, nod-nod dog-whistle to the neo-Confederates who are sobbing in their parents' basements throughout Dixie.

"...violent"?

Bullshit.

Replace with "resolute," and there you have it right.

...communist idols of Lenin, Stalin, etc. Who at the end of the day, may have been ensuring their right to rule, but still tried to keep the empire intact.

It's taken longer for the USA to toppel those idols who wanted to fracture the nation into two and had no intention of keeping the nation intact.

It is true that the snows of winter which never melt, crown our temples, and we realize that we are living in the twilight zone; that it requires no unusual strain to hear the sounds of the tides as they roll and break upon the other shore, “The watch-dog’s bark his deep bay mouth welcome as we draw near home”, breaks upon our ears—makes it doubly sweet to know that we have been remembered in the erection of this beautiful memorial. The present generation, I am persuaded, scarcely takes note of what the Confederate soldier meant to the welfare of the Anglo Saxon race during the four years immediately succeeding the war, when the facts are, that their courage and steadfastness saved the very life of the Anglo Saxon race in the South – When “the bottom rail was on top” all over the Southern states, and to-day, as a consequence the purest strain of the Anglo Saxon is to be found in the 13 Southern States – Praise God.
I trust I may be pardoned for one allusion, howbeit it is rather personal. One hundred yards from where we stand, less than ninety days perhaps after my return from Appomattox, I horse-whipped a negro wench until her skirts hung in shreds, because upon the streets of this quiet village she had publicly insulted and maligned a Southern lady, and then rushed for protection to these University buildings where was stationed a garrison of 100 Federal soldiers. I performed the pleasing duty in the immediate presence of the entire garrison, and for thirty nights afterwards slept with a double-barrel shot gun under my head.

in Raleigh.

My dog and I walk to the grounds every morning and have never seen a police cruiser parked right next to the State Capitol building. There it was!

I lived in Chapel Hill from 2000 to 2017. I'm surprised it took this long for the students to take down Silent Sam. The Republicans have protected removing him, and the Republicans have been screwing the University ever since they hired Bushie boy's former Education Secretary, Margaret Spellings, in 2015, to fu*k the University system. The Republicans hate UNC Chapel Hill because the professors don't kowtow to capitalism and all things Republican.
