Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) announced on Tuesday that she has no plans to running for president in 2020.
Warren spoke at the National Press Club today as part of the roll out for the Anti-Corruption and Public Integrity Act a new bill aimed at restricting politicians who want to become lobbyists after leaving office. The bills proposals include the establishment of an independent anti-corruption agency, a ban on elected officials owning stock in office, and a requirement for the IRS to release the tax returns of any presidential candidates.
Since Warren is frequently cited by Democrats as a possible contender to go up against Donald Trump, she was asked at one point today if she intends on running for president. Her answer:

(16,104 posts)if she had joined the Hillary ticket in 2016, we'd be in a different world today.
If Senator Warren didn't aspire to a higher office then - and be willing to do whatever it took then - I don't see why she would now.

maybe Senate Majority Leader is the correct position for Warren!

(42,862 posts)She was being ambiguous and it was intentional.
Personally, I don't think she's right for the job. She should stay in the Senate where she can do the most good and have the greatest impact.

(15,543 posts)But I don't blame her, or any other politician who is up for election. They must win step one if they even want to think about the next step. Wherever she positions herself, I am glad she is actively involved as an intelligent and courageous American leader.

(6,881 posts)Not sure if she would really want to be president. Her ambition doesn't seem in that direction.

(42,862 posts)If she truly had NO intention of running for president, then she'd say so in clear, definite and unambiguous language.
If she dispels all notions that she's ever going to run for president, then voters (and the press) moves on and she becomes less "relevant".

(11,989 posts)It is undeniably true that, as of August 21 2018, she is not running for president. She's running for Senate. It says nothing whatsoever about what she will be doing in 2020. She *could* make a shermanesque statement, she knows it, and she chooses not to. She seems to prefer to leave the door open a crack. I don't think she will run for President in 2020, but I think she sees it to her advantage to be just a little cagey about it. Similar to how she has said that, if elected, she "intends" to serve a full term as Senator, or that's what she "plans" to do, but intending/planning is not the same as promising.
More likely than a Presidential run, I think, is that she could accept a VP nomination in 2020. Or leave the Senate to serve in the next President's cabinet, if a Dem wins in 2020. Lots of possibilities.

(39,374 posts)IOW, I agree with you. The only thing missing was a wink and a nudge.

(6,881 posts)Subtle. And I suppose you can. You're reading "I am not at the moment running for president". But if she said "I am running for president" would you read that as "I am at the moment running for president (but I might change my mind)"? Really doesn't matter. All politicians say that stuff and it's always assumed they can change their mind.
