President Donald Trump on Wednesday praised his former campaign chairman Paul Manafort for refusing to cooperate with special counsel Robert Muellers probe.
I feel very badly for Paul Manafort and his wonderful family, the president wrote on Twitter. Justice took a 12 year old tax case, among other things, applied tremendous pressure on him and, unlike Michael Cohen, he refused to break make up stories in order to get a deal. Such respect for a brave man!

(8,200 posts)The damage that they have done is irreparable. Nixon directed a gang of burglars and cutthroats and was driven from office and guilty were sent to jail. Millions of Republicans continued to support and adore him. Reagan oversaw a criminal enterprise in which 28 of his cabinet and advisors were convicted and many went to prison. Millions of Republicans adore him as the messiah of the Party. Bush and his henchmen, when the were unable to get the national intelligence agencies to back up their lies, they created their own intelligence agency, absolutely lied to the American people telling them that Saddam absolutely had weapon of mass destruction and was going share them with terrorists. The invasion of Iraq was solely instigated on control of their massive oil reserves. The cost: over 5,000 of our soldiers were killed and ten of thousands maimed for life. Rather than being in jail, their henchmen, such as Bolton, are now serving in the office of the presidency. Now we have Trump. The worst of the worst who has made swindling, lying, conspiracy with the enemy and molesting women his life time vocation.
Do I count any Republcians who continue to turn a blind eye to their party's treachery a friend. Absolutely not. At best I can only consider them to be unfortunate associates. Never friends. Friends are people that I respect for their honor, truthfulness, compassion, and faithfulness. Essential traits that I find totally lacking in those who compromise their values out of intentional disregard for deplorable facts.

(47,449 posts)someone a compliment, it comes across as very awkward, even odd. "Such respect for a brave man!" Manafort, "respect", and "brave" - one of these things is not like the other, one of these things doesn't belong.
Of course, the tweet sounds like a combination of a promise and a threat, as well as a big "screw you" to Cohen.
Meanwhile, I also sense concern that someone could pull up his old tax records and use them against him and his "wonderful family". With Trump, everything is always about Trump.

(101,318 posts)Finally, there was a separate set of charges related to what Manafort allegedly did to try to get millions more in cash once the president of Ukraine was deposed and those payments stopped coming in.
Prosecutors said that between 2015 and early 2017, Manafort defrauded or attempted to defraud several US banks, by lying about his companys finances and other matters in loan applications.
To get a $3.4 million loan on a New York City condo he owned, Manafort falsely told Citizens Bank that the property was a second home when it was a rental property, failed to disclose previous mortgage debt, and, after the lender discovered that debt, falsely claimed it was forgiven. He was convicted of one count of bank fraud for this.
In search of another loan, Manafort submitted a doctored profit and loss form to the Banc of California that overstated his consulting firms income by more than $4 million. He was convicted of another count of bank fraud.

Gary Seferian, a senior vice president at the Banc of California, says he would not have approved the loan to back Manafort's plan for a series of real estate purchases in spring 2016 if he had known Manafort had made false statements on his application.

Manafort quickly got to work, ensuring the Trump campaign had a presence during the selection process and showing up to the Republican National Committees spring meeting in April.

One month later, Manaforts influence within the campaign appeared even more cemented after Trump fired campaign manager Corey Lewandowski, with whom Manafort had a well-documented power struggle.

And yeah, it's real brave to lie in order to secure million dollar loans and cheat on your taxes. 2016 was around two years ago, by my math.

(28,270 posts)can praise his good soldier Manafort now but he will sing like a bird later.
He goes on trial again soon to face many more years on prison. No way in hell is Manafort gonna spend the rest of his life behind bars for the Mob boss-in-charge!
Sammy the bull ratted out John Gotti, Manafort will do the same to UICC45!

(11,885 posts)When he realizes he's talking to Mueller, then claim what a bad man and a liar he is. Manafort will flip as he watches the years stack up for him to serve. Even if trump pardons him they'll make him pay dearly by using more state charges to use against him trump can't prevent, and more costly for Manafort, and result in a longer prison terms, and more charges against trump for his treason , and all his corruption, obstructions , and all the cover ups.
