(18,124 posts)seems pretty active lately. Relatively speaking of course. Hope Hawaii is not hit too savagely by the other type of menace heading its way. May they weather it in safety.

The city is located on the Pacific coast in the upper northwestern part of California, about 20 miles (32 km) south of the Oregon border. Crescent City's offshore geography makes it unusually susceptible to tsunamis. Much of the city was destroyed by four tsunami waves generated by the Good Friday earthquake off Anchorage, Alaska in 1964. More recently, the city's harbor suffered extensive damage and destruction due to tsunamis generated by the March 11, 2011 earthquake off Sendai, Japan. Several dozen vessels and many of the docks they were moored to were destroyed as wave cycles related to the tsunamis exceeded 8 feet (2.4 m). Its climate is also very moderate, with very cool summers for its latitude as a result of intense maritime moderation. Nearby inland areas behind the mountains have significantly warmer summers.

(34,393 posts)The Cascadia Subduction Zone, which extends from northern California to northern Vancouver Island, is within the historical time frame for a major quake to occur. There's 3 plates that converge--the Juan de Fuca Plate, the Gorda Plate & the North American Plate. It's capable of causing a 9.0M quake, similar to the one that hit Japan in 2011. The last time it slipped was in January, 1700, which caused a devastating "orphan tsunami" that hit the northeast coast of Honshu, Japan. They didn't put the two events together until research proved it in the mid 1980's to early 1990's.

(944 posts)I know we are past due for a "big one." I am in Bandon, but didn't feel this. I didn't even hear the warning system go off.
