APNewsBreak: Nation's top student loan official resigns
Source: AP
NEW YORK (AP) The top government official overseeing the $1.5 trillion student loan market resigned Monday, citing what he says is the White Houses open hostility toward protecting nations millions of student loan borrowers.
Seth Frotman will be stepping down from his position as student loan ombudsman at the end of the week, according to his resignation letter which was obtained by The Associated Press. He held that position since 2016.
Frotman is the latest high-level departure from the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau since Mick Mulvaney, President Donald Trumps budget director who has been also acting director of the bureau, took over in late November.
Under Mulvaney, the bureau has scaled back its enforcement work and has proposed revising or rescinding all of the rules and regulations it put into place under the Obama administration. Mulvaney downgraded the mission of Frotmans student loan office and moved it the umbrella of consumer education instead of enforcement.

(2,769 posts)I don't like what you're doing so I'll quit. That's what they want you to do so they can put a yes person in there to do exactly what it is you don't like. If you want to lose a country to thieves and scumbags - that's how you lose a country to thieves and scumbags.

(990 posts)knowledgeable people who will come back to the government to help get the departments back in working order.
When Y2K was a huge worry for all government computers---each department and each military branch called up all the retired programmers and analysts to get it fixed.
My dad was an old programmer (25 year Air Force + 20 year Federal Service) that was called back---and he went because of his dedication to the country.

(7,488 posts)Im making approximately $160,000 a year, with nobody to supervise, with no clear job duties or responsibilities, said Allen, who grew up in a Western family with a working ranch. That doesnt feel like a good use of taxpayer dollars.
Whats happening, he said, is pure ideologues with no expertise or experience are being put in significant senior positions in the Bureau of Land Management, in the National Parks, in Fish and Wildlife or in the Forest Service.
When youre needing desperately expertise with wildland fires or water management in the Bureau of Reclamation, he said, youre getting people who, quite frankly, dont know their head from a hole in the ground and yet theyre earning $110,000 or $120,000 salaries because they are loyal to the Trump administration.

(27,813 posts)Who knows what restrictions they have under Mulvaney? Maybe he feels he can do more good exposing what's going on than basically having to go along with the program? (Maybe I'm being Pollyanna, but that does seem as if it could be one explanation).

I prevailed in a case where they violated my Constitutional rights. 1st, 5th, and 14th Amendments.
Ended up retiring there nearly 20 years after.
I went through hell.
I have little respect for quitters.

(869 posts)...My wife works for the EPA. Her decision has been to keep on fighting. But she is fortunate, what she does falls mostly under positive radar. However, in the past she was involved with environmental enforcement, and that area she could not be in today given the circumstances... (We are both very political Dems)
