Ford cancels Focus crossover model, cites Trump tariffs

Source: The Hill

BY ARIS FOLLEY - 08/31/18 03:50 PM EDT

Ford Motor Co. announced on Friday that it will be canceling its plans to sell its new Chinese-built Focus Active in the U.S. next year, citing President Trump’s escalating trade war as the reasoning behind the move.

Kumar Galhotra, president of the car company’s North America division, said the president’s move to hit autos built in China with an additional 25 percent levy last month undermined the profitability of the new car, which the company had initially planned to ship into the country next year.

“Our viewpoint on Focus Active was that, given the tariffs, obviously our costs would be substantially higher,” Galhotra said in a conference call, according to Bloomberg News.

“Our resources could be better deployed.”

Snips from Bloomberg:

....its cancellation could portend the first of several culling from automakers’ U.S. lineups if Trump continues to escalate trade wars with the likes of China, Europe and even Canada.
----
“The Trump Administration seems very intent on imposing the 232 tariffs,” Dziczek said, referring to the section of trade law being invoked to counter imports. “That would mean that a lot of models would be withdrawn from the U.S. market.”

Are there any traditional republicans out there any more? You know the ones who are willing to go by proper procedures, willing to work across the aisle, bringing vetted bills to the floor for votes, and the ones who actually loved America (even though I don't always agree with their ideas). At least bills use to be given their time in debate and discussion after being crafted in the open air. Not so with the anti-information administration and congressional republicans of today.

Wow, was I fooled. There may be few old-fashioned Repugs left around but they're being kept hid in the woodwork. Some sharp analysts noticed perhaps back in the 90s that there was (and still is) a concerted effort to replace any and all moderate across-the-aisle Republican legislators (including in state gummits) with extreme hard-line right-wing populist know-nothings (whew).

Perhaps some wiser heads than me can chime in and post some historical analysis of how that proceeded and where it stands now.

That effort has been led, directed and funded by some very powerful right-wing think tanks. Essentially, a handful of very wealthy Repugs have completely changed the political landscape on one side of that aisle without direction from their voters (at the same time, those same groups brainwashed millions of voters to think like them via RW media). The Tea Party tribe is one partial result of their work.

And, to complete the circle for them, once they load Congress and the state leges with their parrots, they start feeding legislation to those officials. So, in essence, they have bought-and-paid for government - or plutocracy.

Bill and Hillary were spot-on in the 90s when they said "there's a vast right-wing conspiracy" and we're still neck-deep in it today.
