Trump says he'll 'study' his decision to cancel federal pay raises

Source: NBC News

President Donald Trump said Friday that he would spend part of his Labor Day weekend taking a “good hard look” at his controversial decision earlier this week to cancel scheduled pay raises for most federal employees due to government budget concerns.

“I'm going to study that over the weekend,” Trump said at an event in Charlotte, N.C., Friday afternoon about the pay freeze. “I’m going to take a good, hard look over the weekend.”

The comments come after his Thursday pay freeze announcement was met with heavy criticism from several lawmakers, including some Republicans with districts in northern VirTrump, in a Thursday letter to House and Senate leaders, wrote that he’d decided “across-the-board” pay raises as well as locality pay raises for civilian federal workers scheduled to go into effect in January 2019 would be frozen.

many of Trumps White House staff got the maximum salaries; people like Omarossa, Sarah Huchabee Sanders and Hope Hicks and plenty others with no experience received starting salaries of $180,000 while the workhorse of the federal government gets jerked around waiting anxiously to see if they get a 2% pay raise which may never materialize.

CincyDem nailed it yesterday: https://www.democraticunderground.com/?com=view_post&forum=1002&pid=11074713

he's putting up something revolting that congressional Republicans can use to run against and pretend they're independent of him if it looks necessary in their districts
there may even be some congressional action taken to guarantee pay increases
regardless, Agent Orange will end up discarding this idea and then shit all over the news media for reporting on it, even though it was his idea in the first place

i hope Democrats see the bait-and-switch coming and prepare appropriately.

You don't get up there and brag about a "booming economy" and "4% growth" and then whine about things being so "bad" that you can't give a paltry COLA increase to feds after happily signing one for the military. And then ignore the fact that civilian feds also work in DOD too (i.e., DOD is not all uniformed military personnel, where the military were granted a 2.6% raise yet the civilians would get nothing).

right when everyone has been noticing the uptick in inflation and of course, Feds health insurance premiums will be going up so without a cost of living raise, they will actually get a pay decrease if no COLA next year.

Guess some Repubs running for reelection let Trump's WH know there are lots of Repubs, not just Deep State Dems in federal work force and most federal employees do not make huge salaries.

Since Trump has no idea about anything, I'm sure Mulvaney is behind the decision to cancel not only the pay raise, but also locality pay increases. The locality pay is what gives it away as something only an insider like Mulvaney would know about.

Now that the blowback is strong, expect Trump to change course and then scapegoat Mulvaney.
