CHICAGO (WLS) -- Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel announced Tuesday morning he's not running for reelection.
Emanuel made the announcement at a City Hall press conference that he will not seek reelection at the end of his term. The mayoral election will take place on Feb. 26, 2019.
"Today, the time has come to make another tough choice. As much as I love this job, and will always love this city and its residents, I've decided not to seek reelection," he said.
Emanuel was visibly emotional during the announcement.

(21,674 posts)Emanuel's not my favorite Democrat; but he certainly did a great job as head of the DCCC in '06.

(21,646 posts)Also last time the mayor & police held back the shooting video until after the mayor election . Citizens had to sue to have that tape released
That tape is out now and the case against the shooter of Laquan McDonald is starting in court on very irregular terms .
The police officer and his wife holding on air interviews right before the trial on how he is a good man etc. Emanuel is not going to look any better for holding the police tapes back over a year until sued, once the trial starts.
Also by making everyone scramble to run with the late announcement for elections next FEB, and his biggest competitor off to the US house, with no prepared candidates, he insures a great legacy for himself . Hey look what happened after I left !

(206,094 posts)CHICAGO - Rahm Emanuel, whose tumultuous tenure as Chicago mayor included an infamous police shooting and a surge in violent crime, said in a surprise announcement Tuesday that he would abandon his plan to seek a third term next year but gave no reason for the sudden change of heart.
Emanuel also led the effort to conduct the largest mass closing of neighborhood schools in American history and is credited with helping to stabilize the city's finances through politically unpopular increases in taxes and fees.
The 58-year-old former White House chief of staff known for his pugnacious political style said only that he and his wife "look forward to writing that next chapter in our journey together."
"This has been the job of a lifetime, but it is not a job for a lifetime," the mayor said, reading prepared remarks at a news conference where he was joined at the podium by his wife. He held her hand throughout the announcement.
