Romney: GOP ‘Let People Down’ on Budget
Source: Wall Street Journal
CINCINNATIMitt Romney said Saturday that his party had fallen short on its fiscal promises even as he campaigned alongside a top Republican congressional leader.
Were going to finally have to do something that Republicans have spoken about for a long time and for a while we didnt do it. When we had the lead, we let people down, Mr. Romney told a crowd in this important swing state. We need to make sure they are not let down again. I will cut the deficit and get us on track to a balanced budget.
While Mr. Romney regularly promises to whip the budget into shape, he rarely says that his fellow Republicans have fallen short.
In a call for unity, the Republican presidential candidate said he would work to bring both sides of the aisle together if he wins the presidency.

Yeah, right. As if the tax cuts and increased defense spending he's advocating aren't what added so much to the deficit in the first place.

(130,923 posts)'When House Speak John Boehner (R., Ohio) introduced Mr. Romney, he served up some fiery criticism for his Democratic counterparts in Congress.
We have focused on the economy and jobs every single day, said Mr. Boehner. And, you know, while weve done all this good work in the House and done what the people have asked us to do, Harry Reid has blocked everything weve sent over there, he said, referring to the Democratic Senate majority leader.
Amid a partisan standoff in Washington over taxation and budget-cutting, Congress has become a highly unpopular institution. Just 12% of registered voters said they approved of the job Congress was doing in an August Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll. Some 82% said they disapproved.'

(7,403 posts)Romney's pick for VP was a leader that submarined the grand bargain last year that would have cut spending and the deficit so his words ring hollow while his actions speak loudly.

(12,461 posts)why should we believe promises he has made? He has been all over the place on every issue...one who does not intend to keep his word, can do that. Why should we trust a liar to keep his word?

Oh well, at least my tax dollars can then be used again for immoral neocon wars. Just great.

(1,920 posts)If elected, he'd do all those things you listed, but it wouldn't cut the deficit or balance the budget. It would only make them worse.

(2,331 posts)this is so infuriating!! the repugs have had this strategy from the beginning.. to DENY obama a second term by tying up the wheels of government to make him look ineffective.. to stop him from creating jobs and it's amazing he's got anything done at all, much less saving us from a depression, doubling the DOw and creating 4 million private sector jobs.. SOOO RMONey is NOW trying to say that whEN HE Is president, the Republicans will cooperate.. that's his pitch!!! that's their strategy.. a republican as president or obstruction... he and all the puke leadership are tools.

(50,559 posts)Note to the GOP: the words "tax cut" and "balanced budget" should never come from the lips of the same person.
