Trump adviser eyes entitlement cuts to plug U.S. budget gaps

NEW YORK (Reuters) - A top economic adviser to President Donald Trump said on Monday he expects U.S. budget deficits of about 4 percent to 5 percent of the country’s economic output for the next one to two years, adding that there would likely be an effort in 2019 to cut spending on entitlement programs.

“We have to be tougher on spending,” White House economic adviser Larry Kudlow said in remarks to the Economic Club of New York, adding that government spending was the reason for the wider budget deficits, not the Republican-led tax cuts activated this year. Kudlow did not specify where future cuts would be made.

“We’re going to run deficits of about 4 to 5 percent of GDP for the next year or two, OK. I’d rather they were lower but it’s not a catastrophe,” Kudlow said. “Going down the road, of course we’d like to slim that down as much as possible and we’ll work at it.”

He stated that the biggest factor for revenue was economic growth rate. A quicker pace of growth will bring in more revenue, Kudlow said, and that President Donald Trump’s economic policies were aimed at boosting the U.S. growth rate.

The middle class and poor will be taking on some of the tax burden of the wealthy...a shift from the wealthy to the "little people."

It's happening on state levels, too.

they can and will go after safety net programs, most of the money is spent in red states so the tRumpsters will feel the pain. As long as dems go along with averting a government shutdown at any cost the fascists will rape the system. Dems need to play dirty, never, ever make tRump look good including keeping the gov open.

Kudlow says it's not the sweeping tax cuts that left a budget gap, but spending. I guess spending like Trump's increases in the military budget? That's where the cuts should begin.

Kudlow sounds desperate to keep backing his theory that those tax cuts will increase revenue when they are obviously not. Social spending was already there when they cut taxes.

Except it won't. Repugs NEVER learn from past mistakes because they are ideologues, not economists. They drained the treasury to the tune of $1.9 trillion, and think the genius of their plan will cause enough growth to replace it. It won't. Never has. Everything they predicted would happen as a result of their genius plan has not happened.

The growth on the back of massive deficit spending.
The increase in revenues was the fraction of the borrowed money paid as taxes!
That number was 35% of the 24% of taxable profits after depreciation!
So for every 100 billion dollars borrowed the growth (nominal) was 5.1 _billion
That was about 0.1%! Big deal!

growth is for the corporations/elite who are reaping all the benefits of investing those tax cuts into company stock. Where is the economic growth for working class people. I wish the M$M would report more about who has/has not seen economic growth under Trump.

nothing to do with the tax cuts and it is all the Democrats fault. Just look how they flipped their 2008 economic meltdown around and dominated the midterms in 2010.

The next Democratic President must aggressively go after the right-wing propaganda complex. They need to be discredited forcefully and universally.
