GOP Draws Line In The Sand For Blasey Ford: Monday Hearing Or Bust

Senate Republicans Tuesday night and Wednesday morning showed they were unwilling to negotiate the terms of the public hearing next Monday to which they invited Christine Blasey Ford, the professor who has accused Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh of sexual assault.
With the risk that further delay could imperil the Kavanaugh nomination, GOP senators fought to make Monday the drop-dead deadline for addressing the Blasey Ford accusation, insisting that its time to move on with or without her testimony.
Tuesday night, Blasey Fords attorneys sent the Senate Judiciary Committee a letter asking for a FBI investigation into her allegations before she testified in front of the committee. GOP senators responded by suggesting that Blasey Fords one option was to appear next Monday at the hearing, where Kavanaugh would also testify, and that she was turning down their good faith offer to hear her out.
Weve offered Dr. Ford the opportunity to share her story with the committee, as her attorney said yesterday she was willing to do. We offered her a public or a private hearing as well as staff-led interviews, whichever makes her most comfortable. The invitation for Monday still stands, Judiciary Chairman Chuck Grassley (R-IA) said in a statement Tuesday night. Dr. Fords testimony would reflect her personal knowledge and memory of events. Nothing the FBI or any other investigator does would have any bearing on what Dr. Ford tells the committee, so there is no reason for any further delay.

There will be a backlash in November because they can't wait until this is investigated thoroughly.

(6,377 posts)Less-controversial judge. If they ram Kavanaugh through, it could turn independents away from them even more.

(972 posts)Senate seats can be won back in 2, 4, or 6 years. A Supreme Court Justice could be there for 25 or 30 years.

(53,792 posts)There are now 6 witnesses willing to testify against this guy.
It could turn out to be another Anita Hill debacle for repugs.

(972 posts)That's a tall order. And Anita Hill ultimately did not stop Thomas so wasn't really that big a of a problem in the long term. He's been on the bench now for for almost 27 years now. How many Senators have come and gone and how many times has the Senate changed hands in that time?

(10,024 posts)She can testify later in the week. Typical bullying. The GOP can still have their vote to confirm their bought and paid for Supreme Court seat in plenty of time to energize their corporate-loving women-hating base.
