Arizona moves to revoke licenses from all Southwest Key migrant-children shelters

The state Department of Health Services moved Wednesday to revoke the licenses of Southwest Key's 13 Arizona shelters for migrant children, citing the nonprofit's failure to provide proof that its workers had received the required background checks.
The shelter operator missed a Sept. 14 deadline to double-check the clearance of its 2,000-plus employees, many of whom work with migrant children.
The state had requested that check after repeated reports of abuse of migrant children by Southwest Key employees, and after state inspections found repeated instances where the company had not received fingerprint-clearance cards from its hires, as the state requires.
DHS Director Cara Christ chastised Southwest Key's CEO and founder, Juan Sanchez, in a letter notifying him of the state's intent to pull its health-care licenses. The company, she wrote, displayed an "astonishingly flippant attitude" in meeting requirements it had agreed to just last month.

(6,556 posts)What is happening at ICE shelters is unconscionable. Inadequate paperwork, reported allegations of abuse, a reported death of a child, inadequate nutrition, lack of needed medical attention, etc. All of this corruption and neglect for the price of $750 per child per day. It costs $80 per day for prisoners. Guess where the extra money is going!
