Democrats have leads in Rust Belt states that Trump won: Reuters poll

Source: Reuters

NEW YORK (Reuters) - An Indiana U.S. Senator seen as one of the chamber’s most vulnerable Democrats has a slight edge while four of his Rust Belt Democratic colleagues have solid leads in states President Donald Trump won in 2016, a Reuters poll found.

A Reuters/Ipsos/UVA Center for Politics Poll released on Wednesday found that a majority of likely voters in Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Ohio, Michigan and Indiana disapprove of the Republican president and more than one-third were “very motivated” to back someone who would oppose his policies.

The poll found that Senator Joe Donnelly of Indiana has a 3 percentage point lead among likely voters over Republican businessman Mike Braun. Braun, a former state representative, has positioned himself as a Trump-like candidate who would bring an outsider’s perspective to politics in Vice President Mike Pence’s home state.

Democrats are aiming to win two more Senate seats in the Nov. 6 congressional election to take a majority in that chamber and serve as a check on Trump’s agenda. They can ill afford to lose any of the five seats covered by the poll.

From the OP link -

The wave of support for Democrats may unseat Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker, a Republican former presidential candidate who became popular in conservative circles for taking on unions. Walker trailed Democratic state schools superintendent Tony Evers by 7 percentage points.

This is surprising and hope it holds.

Elsewhere, the poll found Democratic candidates on solid footing. In Pennsylvania, U.S. Senator Bob Casey Jr., a Democrat, led Republican congressman Lou Barletta by 16 points, and in the governor’s race incumbent Democrat Tom Wolf was ahead of Republican Scott Wagner by 17 points.

(fantastic because they refuse to talk about this here in PA)

In Michigan, U.S. Senator Debbie Stabenow, a Democrat, led Republican challenger John James by 20 points, while Democrat Gretchen Whitmer was ahead of Republican Bill Schuette by 13 points in the governor’s race.

This is good news to flip MI.

In Ohio, incumbent U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown led Republican Jim Renacci by 11 points.

This is good too but from earlier in the article, I would have hoped that Cordray would be doing a bit better.

after seeing people like the firebrand Jennifer Granholm elected there. I know the upper peninsula is pretty red but the population up there is also sparse.

Whoever is elected governor this year will be in place for the 2020 census so we need to get as many Ds in between now and 2020 in order to oversee that process (which will impact redistricting).

Didn't Jennifer Granholm have a Republican legislature that put roadblocks in the way of everything she tried to do?

I think that was during her first term. But during her 2nd term, MI was able to cash in on the 2006 blue wave that not only gave the U.S. House back to Democrats after 12 years, but also trickled down into the states, so MI Ds were able to capture their state House in 2006.

We have had a similar issue here in PA with a completely GOP-controlled legislature, where Ds briefly took control of the state House in the 2006 wave too but lost it in 2010 (and the subsequent redistricting sealed that fate).

Taking control of as many state governments as possible right now is really important as the state governments run the elections and draw the district lines. After the 2020 census, whomever controls the states will have a leg p in controlling Washington.

It's a red state, but not as red as traditionally southern states like Alabama and Mississippi. The state actually went blue in 2008.

is never underestimate precise propaganda campaigns targeting strategic districts. I'm worried Russia will do something like that again and, of course, Republicans will allow it. Like someone said, the only thing that matters is getting everyone to vote Democrat, regardless of what polls say.

Is Rosen just not a very dynamic candidate? That should be a W for the good guys in my opinion. Doesn't look like it's heading in that direction.
