Brazil's Far-Right Presidential Candidate Says He Won't Accept The Election Results If He Loses

Source: Buzzfeed News

Jair Bolsonaro also accused former Brazilian president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva of hatching a plot to retake power.

Jair Bolsonaro, the far-right candidate leading the polls in Brazil’s presidential election, said on Friday that he will not accept any election results where he is not the winner.

“I do not accept election results other than my election,” Bolsonaro, who is running on the Social Liberal Party (PSL) ticket, said in an interview with local journalist José Luiz Datena from the hospital where he’s been recovering from a stab wound inflicted while campaigning earlier this month.

He elaborated that the only way his main opponent in the first round of the polls, the Workers Party (PT) candidate Fernando Haddad, could win is through electronic voting fraud.

. . .

His statements closely resemble those of President Donald Trump in the run-up to the 2016 presidential election, when he assured his supporters that the election is “rigged.” Bolsonaro has been compared to Trump with growing frequency.

Bolsonaro and Macri should start a Cheeto look-alike contest.

The Brazilian military may have something to say about it if he loses the election then refuses to leave office.

It's no secret that while Temer doesn't belong to Bolosonaro's far-right party, he would much rather have him in office than anyone from the Workers' Party. Many in the armed forces (and powerful business lobbies) no doubt feel likewise.

Temer might, on the other hand, choose to go down as a good caretaker dictator, and facilitate a peaceful transfer of power - but the alternative must surely sound tempting to him right about now.

strong of a reaction?

This threat of not respecting the negative results of an election is simply that, a naked threat to the rule of law.

I guess I am nervous when rump loses the 2018 midterms (his candidates) and the 2020 presidential elections, he'll lash out and dispute/bitch/refuse to leave.

That word is being thrown around so casually that its meaning is going to be very diluted.

At this point he's not advocating for a violent coup or something like that, he's just blowing hot air. Huffing and puffing, just like someone else we know. He's trying to look tough from his hospital bed.

There are things that this guy in Brazil or Trump can say or get away with that no "radical leftist" could ever dream of doing.
