Flake indicates he'll back Kavanaugh in final vote

Source: Politico

Momentum is growing for the Supreme Court nominee after the Arizona senator supports him and the Senate votes to advance his nomination.

By BURGESS EVERETT, ELANA SCHOR, ANDREW RESTUCCIA and JOHN BRESNAHAN 10/05/2018 08:24 AM EDT Updated 10/05/2018 12:21 PM EDT

Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh advanced to a final confirmation vote, narrowly clearing a key procedural hurdle on Friday morning, 51-49.

The vote was mostly on party lines, though Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) voted "no" and Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) voted "yes." Kavanaugh's confirmation is not assured: A handful of senators could conceivably vote differently on Saturday during an expected confirmation vote.

Most senators sat at their desk as the dramatic roll call unfolded, with major suspense over where Murkowski, Manchin and Sen. Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.) would land. Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine) was the first swing vote to support Kavanaugh on the procedural roll call, quickly followed by Flake. Murkowski then inaudibly voted no, a jarring defection that left Republicans with no room for error.

After it was clear that Kavanaugh had the 50 needed vote to advance, Manchin became Kavanaugh's only Democratic supporter. Manchin, who left the chamber when the clerk called his name, came back into the chamber and voted in favor of Kavanaugh. His phone could be seen ringing and Manchin stared at it as the vote continued.

No indication of final vote at all, just like Manchin and Collins...and even Gardner.

Never will understand that of true Democrats. Tribalism is what got us into this mess in the first place.

that is one, the second is that Flake talks the talk, but doesn't walk the walk. He gave his grand speech last year about trump, and I for one thought it was very good, but since then has done nothing but support the whims of the man-child. So what do you want people to expect from Flake if history proves he is just talk? That most probably his move to extend the confirmation and demand an "investigation" was nothing short of a Hollywood act?

At this point in time one could make up the story that Flake lent himself as an actor for a republican strategy, one previously discussed with other republicans (McConnell, Graham, etc., the usual suspects) to pretend to be outraged, and "demand" an "investigation", knowing full well that the WH and republicans would not allow for a thorough investigation and this was just part of the play to have the country think that republicans were trying to find the truth. See? one can think all of this because if Flake was honest about his actions he would not be pleased with the investigation, he has to know that it was a fraud, just an act, and if so he would demand a more thorough investigation, one where all witnesses, the accused, and the accuser are interrogated by the FBI, that all the dots are connected.

But no, Flake is, like someone here wrote, a FAKE!

I hope that he changes his mind before the final vote, but as I said, Flake's history is shallow, he is a follower, I can't say he lacks principles because he may have misguided principles, but he always falls in line with the party, no independent thought that I have seen in his brain.

Flake may be retiring from the senate, but he still wants conservative dollars. He will get a cozy consulting job, or teaching position, or thin-tank spot, speaking engagements, tv commentator spots, etc,

If he votes no, all of that will be shut off to him. Trump may even have the fbi investigate him. Other gop operatives surely have dirt on him; they are all dirty. It wouldn't be hard to convince him to vote yes and shut the heck up.

Same with collins.

Murkowski got the one and only get out of vote free card.

He claimed the the investigation needed to to be legit and not rigged. He said it couldn't be just for show.

But it clearly was rigged. I mean they didn't even interview Ford and Kavanaugh. To be even plausibly legit, you'd have to interview these two before interviewing anyone else!

What was the point of him delaying the vote a week ago then?

Even if he'd voted NO, it would have been 50-50 and Pence would've voted AYE as the tie-breaking vote.

I don't like it, but it's understandable politically because if Dems are to retake the Senate they need Manchin to retain his seat. If Dems flip the Senate, they will have the power to do stop Trump from putting rw judges on the courts and to investigate Kavanaugh.
