Huntsville prisoner allegedly killed by guard was handcuffed during deadly use-of-force

The Texas prisoner allegedly killed by a guard earlier this year was handcuffed during the August use-of-force incident in a Huntsville prison that led to his death, state records show.

Inmate Gary Lesley Ryan was in pre-hearing detention — a form of solitary confinement — when investigators say guard D’Andre Glasper ignored protocol and disobeyed direct orders, pulling the 58-year-old out of his cell to take him to the shower alone at the Estelle Unit. On the way, the two got into “an argument,” records show, and Glasper decided to take the older man down to the ground.

The ex-guard said he didn’t mean to hurt the inmate, but it’s not clear from state records how the handcuffed prisoner posed a threat sufficient to justify use of force.

“People in handcuffs can be dangerous, don’t get me wrong,” said Lance Lowry, a Huntsville corrections officer who runs a criminal justice-focused nonprofit, “but while they’re in handcuffs the level of force escalation is limited.”

or James Bond. Those are f-ing movies. But that's not how Internal Affairs, District Attorneys, defense attorneys, and police/correctional unions approach these things.

Juries (grand or petit) are generally presented with this idea that every prisoner is some kind of Batman/ninja waiting to happen and so whatever is done to them can be explained away by appealing to danger and fear. And the citizens on those juries overwhelmingly go along with it.

Sick, sick, sick. Our nation is sick.

The badged criminal should be in prison awaiting his execution for murder. This injustice should be taken care of now. Today's society and those in Texas do not recognize murder by a bagel person. It will take a miracle for this case to be resolved since that society covers up injustice and murder........
