(160,530 posts)To hear they ran into trouble. They stoped the transmission on the screen and I left, assuming all was well. So glad the two made it out o.k.
Thank you for having the story so quickly!

(12,586 posts)and when I got back a minute later the NASA moderator was saying, "Emergency crews have been deployed and should take an hour and a half to reach the capsule's landing site."
Shit. It's like stepping away from the television a couple of years ago when Alabama was ahead and an Auburn player caught an attempted field goal by Alabama in the end zone and ran the entire length of the field to win the game:
I'm glad the crew is o.k.
BTW, Alabama fans, sorry to open an old wound...

Updated 23 mins ago
BAIKONUR, Kazakhstan --NASA says that two astronauts from the U.S. and Russia are in good condition after an emergency landing following booster rocket failure minutes after the launch.
NASA astronaut Nick Hague and Roscosmos' Alexei Ovchinin lifted off as scheduled at 2:40 p.m. (0840 GMT; 4:40 a.m. EDT) Thursday from the Russia-leased Baikonur cosmodrome in Kazakhstan atop a Soyuz booster rocket.
They were to dock at the International Space Station six hours later, but the booster suffered engine failure minutes after the launch.
NASA said it has been informed by Russian space officials that the crew has made an emergency landing at an unspecified location in Kazakhstan and is in good condition. Search and rescue crews are heading to the landing site.

(1,560 posts)The crew had to return in "ballistic descent mode", Nasa tweeted, which it explained was "a sharper angle of landing compared to normal".
"Ballistic descent mode" ....because "falling like a rock" has so many negative connotations. o_0
Everyone made it safely back to the ground though, so the only downside was the need to don new underwear.
