Democratic gubernatorial nominee Andrew Gillum on Thursday demanded that Florida TV stations stop broadcasting a maliciously false attack ad put out by the state Republican Party, warning that further broadcast of the ad would be intentionally defamatory.
In a cease-and-desist letter, lawyers for the Gillum campaign claims the ad was approved by his GOP opponent Rep. Ron DeSantis and makes demonstrably false claims. The 30-second spot focuses on an ongoing FBI public corruption investigation into the city government in Tallahassee, where Gillum serves as mayor.
Andrew Gillum is running for Governor and also from the FBI, the ad, which is cut through with images of police tape, states. It ends with a line saying Gillum is not just radical, but corrupt.
Gillums attorney writes that the candidate is neither the subject of the probe nor received any anonymous payments from anyone, as suggested.

Can a station revise the content of a political use?
When a legally qualified candidate for office makes a use of a station, the station is NOT permitted to censor or otherwise alter the candidates message in any way (other than by adding a missing sponsorship identification). While some political uses may contain content which the station might ordinarily choose not to broadcast, the station cannot alter the use at all. However, the station is protected from any liability that may result from the candidates message. This no censorship provision applies only to candidate advertising and not to third party advertising. Thus, stations need to take potential liability into account when deciding whether to accept such third party ads.

(6,699 posts)Slander and pump lies into the mainstream, and then we fight back by threatening to bring law suits or demand the propaganda lies be taken down. Meanwhile, these lies are stacked in the heads of the Floridians. It makes NO difference that they are lies...that they are defamatory or total fabrications; what matters is that they become "fact" in the minds of the citizens.
This is just so fucking bad!! This is how low we have sunk with politics today. Maybe it's always been this ugly and nasty.....probably. But it still pisses me off! That little lying weasel is going to be elected through these types of tactics.

(6,831 posts)nastiest elections in recent memory. DeSantis is a low-life snizzwad. His public comments are littered with abusive, racist, misogynistic insults and below-the-belt smears. There is NO low to which he will not stoop in this election. This is going to get ugly.
Remember that Spanky has endorsed DeSantis, too.

(22,977 posts)refused and outright turned away help after Hurricane Hermine. Gillum responded to that one by having the Sheriff of Leon County come right out and say DeSantis was lying.
Republican candidates across this state are pulling out the stops to maliciously smear pretty much every Democratic candidate. Hmmm why are they so worried???? (rhetorical)
I fear shades of 2000 at the polls this year in Florida.
