State Senate Candidate Behind Mailer Criticized As Anti-Semitic, Apologizes To His Jewish Opponent But Does Not Drop Out

Matthew Ormseth

Ed Charamut, a Republican candidate for state Senate, apologized Wednesday for targeting his Jewish opponent with a mailer widely viewed as anti-Semitic but indicated he would remain in the race for the 9th Senate District seat.

On Monday, just two days after 11 people were killed in an attack on a Pittsburgh synagogue, Charamut’s mailer began appearing in mailboxes, showed a grinning, digitally doctored image of his opponent, Matt Lesser, clutching hundred-dollar bills.

Despite the uproar, Charamut defended the mailers Tuesday and accused Lesser of playing identity politics. On Wednesday, he reiterated that the imagery was intended to portray only Lesser’s purported policy record as a spendthrift Democrat, but apologized to Lesser, the Jewish community and “anyone who found the mailer to be anything other than a depiction of policy differences.”

“It is clear now that the imagery could be interpreted as anti-Semitic,” Charamut said in a statement, “and for that we deeply apologize as hate speech of any kind does not belong in our society and especially not in our politics.”

After huge backlash from people across Connecticut AND the United States, finally a reluctant and luke-warm "apology".

I totally agree, FUCK’EM!

Except, FOR ME, I give my elderly parents/Aunts & Uncles a “FUCK OFF” exemption.

I don’t go anywhere near Facebook these days because most of our family over 60-65yrs old are what I call 100% “inFOXicated”! IT SUX! Many of them have been glued to FOX “Noise” & AM RAGE RADIO since the late 90’s...I’VE CLEARLY WATCHED IT CHANGE WHO SOME OF MY RELATIVES ARE! Including my own Dad!

Not to get going on a rant but not only does Conservative Media push Right Wing Ideology & Conspiracy Theories on their audiences using religious bigotry, hate, fear, spin & LIES...But Conservative Media floods their audience with ads from businesses that rip them off!! Especially their elderly audiences!

4. Update: "Republican leader: Campaign mailer was offensive to Jews"

WHEC:

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — The head of Connecticut's Republican Party has acknowledged a campaign mailer sent by a candidate for state Senate was offensive to Jewish people, but the target of the flyer said he hasn't received an apology.

The mailer, sent to voters in a central Connecticut Senate district from Republican Ed Charamut, of Rocky Hill, includes an image of his Democratic opponent, state Rep. Matthew Lesser, with cash in his hands and a maniacal look on his face. Lesser is Jewish.

Lesser said the image is overtly anti-Semitic. He said he has not been contacted by Charamut or state Republican leaders since the mailing went out.

"I'm not sure if there is anything he could do to undo the hurt that he has inflicted on my family, but also on a like number of people across the district, across the state and across the nation," he said.

Be honest. It was clear before the mailer was sent. That was why the imagery was selected.

Drop out you fucking bigot.
