American people will see Trump's tax returns, senior House Democrat predicts

Source: Marketwatch

Democrats in the House will obtain a copy of President Trump’s tax returns now that they control the chamber, a member of the party’s leadership in the chamber predicted Wednesday.

“The American people will see his tax returns, not because of any voyeuristic interest but because they should know if he’s corrupt," said Rep. Eric Swalwell, a Democrat of California, in an interview on NBC News’ “Today Show.”

Democrats will also probe issues such as “cashing in on access to the Oval Office” and the president’s “financial entanglements overseas,” Swalwell said. The party also wanted to “fill in the blanks” of the probe of Russia investigations, he added.

Swalwell is a member of the House Democratic caucus’ leadership team, as co-chair of the Democratic Policy and Communications Committee.

Will the Supreme court be involved? What can the House actually do to him? Do his lawyers have to give up documents if he tells them not to?

Unless he tries to order the IRS not to turn them over. Then you’ve got a clear case of obstruction of justice.

And thanks to a 1924 provision in the Internal Revenue Code, the chairmen of the House Ways and Means Committee and Senate Finance Committee are authorized to request the president's -- or indeed anyone's -- tax returns from the IRS to conduct an investigation.

The chairmen of the tax-writing committees -- whether they act together or alone -- don't need to disclose that they've requested the president's returns. But they may choose to -- and likely would -- share the returns with their committee members in closed session.

If the committee thinks releasing the returns to the House or Senate would further a legitimate committee purpose, they're permitted to do so, according to George Yin, a former chief of staff at the Joint Committee on Taxation and a professor of law at the University of Virginia.

At that point it's up to the full chamber to decide whether to make the returns public. "Of course, as a practical matter, it's a little hard to imagine information going to the full House or Senate and not becoming public," Yin said.

My bet is, that when we see his tax returns we will finally know just how BIG his lies have been. And we will be able to connect the dots of all of his financial misdoings since he was elected.

I'm praying for RICO.

Free rotten eggs to pelt at Trump for those who pay for the $25 admission to Alcatraz Island Prison.

And that's his only nourishment.

Giving politicians access to them and making them available to the American people aren't the same thing.
