Tester faced strong opposition from Republican Matt Rosendale. He also was a target of President Trump, who was angry after Tester helped scuttle his nominee to lead Veterans Affairs. Trump won Montana by 20 points in 2016.

This is a developing story. It will be updated.

UPDATE:

Jon Tester wins reelection in Montana

By MARTIN MATISHAK 11/07/2018 01:38 PM EST

Democratic Sen. Jon Tester has won reelection narrowly in Montana, defeating Republican Matt Rosendale after a fiery campaign marked by Tester’s clashes with President Donald Trump.

Tester had 49 percent of the vote to 48 percent for Rosendale, the Montana state auditor, when the Associated Press called the race on Wednesday afternoon with 92 percent of precincts reporting.

Tester had long been favored to win reelection, despite seeking a third term in a state Trump carried by more than 20 percentage points in 2016. But the race tightened significantly in the fall, and the president visited Montana four times to champion Rosendale, after Tester scuttled Trump’s nominee to run the Department of Veterans Affairs, White House doctor Ronny Jackson, after raising pointed questions about Jackson’s on-the-job conduct.

“He tried to destroy Admiral Ronny Jackson,” Trump said last weekend in Belgrade, calling Jackson “the most clean-cut, wonderful person that you've ever met.”

10:50 a.m.:

GREAT FALLS -- Incumbent U.S. Sen. Jon Tester has won re-election to his third term, fending of a challenge from Republican state Auditor Matt Rosendale.

Despite an unprecedented four trips to the state by President Donald Trump to try to defeat him, Tester emerged with 49 percent, or 218,145 votes, to Rosendale's 48 percent, or 213,934 votes, in unofficial totals. That's a lead of 4,211 votes.

The race was expected to be close from the start; Tester has never captured 50 percent of the vote in his past two wins in 2006 and 2012.

As polls closed Tuesday, it marked the end of a Senate election unlike any other in the state, where more than $60 million in candidate and outside money was spent to sway voters. President Donald Trump played an outsized role in the contest, making an unprecedented four trips to Montana to hold campaign rallies in support of Rosendale. His surrogates, including Vice President Mike Pence and son Donald Trump Jr., also barnstormed the state multiple times.
