Congress told the immigration agency to reduce its detentions. Instead, ICE detained more people than ever, The Daily Beast has learned. Where did it find the money?

The number of people detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement has hit an all-time high, according to recent statistics reviewed by The Daily Beast.
That massive increase in detentions by the highly controversial agency has prompted questions from rights groups about how Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) obtained the money to place into its custody 4,000 more people than Congress has funded. Earlier this year, when facing a similar shortfall, the Department of Homeland Security, ICEs parent organization, quietly moved nearly $100 million dollars out of other areas of its budget, including the Federal Emergency Management Agency, prompting an outcry from a prominent senator.
That senator, Oregon Democrat Jeff Merkley, told The Daily Beast it was unsurprising that the Trump administration was exceeding historic high water marks of detainees to pursue their ideologically driven policy agenda. But Merkley, a member of the powerful Senate appropriations committee, demanded ICE account for how it had somehow found the moneysomething it and the Department of Homeland Security would not do in response to The Daily Beasts questions.
It is incredibly important that ICE explain how theyre paying for nearly 4,000 more beds. In September, when I discovered that ICE had been reprogramming FEMA dollars to pay for immigrant detention centers, I wasnt given the information from the administration. I wasnt given the information as a member of the Senate appropriations committee. I found the information through outside resources, Merkley said.

(22,651 posts)floor 'beds' . $6 a day to feed them, government issue cheap blankets & toilet paper= a hefty profit per "bed". Some have to wait years for their turn in front of a Judge. trouble/sick are quickly deported.
for profit concentration camps will never move fast when each prisoner brings in $21,000 a month in free government money

(23,156 posts)Like with all drumpf efforts, you have to look deeper to the money. DeVos and other drumpf funders are making out like bandits, getting exorbitant profits out of torturing Hispanic children & their parents. You know damn well that drumpf has already gotten paid, for his part in making this happen and is determined to get a big bonus for the huge increase he's caused. He's stealing money from FEMA and hurricane victims to harm brown people and pay himself and his friends. That's why he wants money for Puerto Rico's recovery to stop, he's already stolen it.

(22,651 posts)It's a fact Republicans, put corporations first and help those "welfare kings" with plenty of Federal money, State funds and public land 'cheap leases'.
Government even pays (we pay) to repair the public lands, roads, fencing, planting grass after a corp. and/or mega 'rancher' ruins it.
