Democrat Porter flips GOP House seat in Southern California
Source: AP News
LOS ANGELES (AP) Democrat Katie Porter captured a Republican-held U.S. House seat Thursday in the heart of what once was Southern Californias Reagan country, extending a rout of the states GOP House delegation that might not be over.
Porters upset in Orange County is a sign of changing times in a region once known nationally as a GOP fortress. The coastal county southeast of Los Angeles was home to President Richard Nixon, and President Ronald Reagan once likened it to a Republican heaven.
Porter, a law professor and protege of Massachusetts Democratic Sen. Elizabeth Warren, defeated Republican Rep. Mimi Walters, who was re-elected in a walkover just two years ago in the 45th District. The latest update to the vote count gave Porter 51 percent and a 6,203-vote lead.
Porter, 44, campaigned on an unabashed liberal agenda and in direct opposition to President Donald Trumps priorities: She advocates overturning his tax reform package, supports universal health care, and endorses mandatory background checks on all gun sales and a ban on so-called assault-style weapons.

(182,877 posts)Orange County, the California collection of 34 cities and 3.2 million residents once described by President Reagan as where all the good Republicans go to die, died Tuesday. It was 129 years old.
Long famous for its wealth, whiteness and conservative values, Orange County is survived by its offspring, who include a population that is about 60% people of color, some of the most crowded and poor neighborhoods in the United States and a Republican Party thats on the ropes. Once reliably red, the official cause of O.C.s passing is a case of the blue flu, which turned its politics more purple than Barney the dinosaur.
The death shocked everyone who hadnt bothered to pay attention for decades. County boosters and leaders had desperately tried to mask its failing health with a series of anti-immigrant resolutions, orange-shaped balloons at Great Park, and a string of increasingly vapid reality TV series. But as the years went on, the Orange County of old gradually succumbed to a new generation of working-class unions, multicultural youngsters and middle-class voters who just didnt care about demonizing the downtrodden, except for the homeless.

(767 posts)The republicans still infest the rural mountains and desert areas in the state. Less republican representatives but they cover a big area of the state in the less densely populated areas. Slowly us democrats are moving into these areas. My area may have 45% democratic and 55% republican.....CHEERS
