Former New York mayor Michael R. Bloomberg announced Sunday he is giving a record $1.8 billion to Johns Hopkins University to support student financial aid at his alma mater and make its admissions process forever need-blind.
The gift, believed to be the largest private donation in modern times to higher education, is a landmark in a growing national movement to make elite universities more accessible to students from low-to-middle income families.
It will enable the private research university in Baltimore to eliminate loans from financial aid packages for incoming students starting next fall, expand grants for those in financial need and even provide relief to many current undergraduates who had previously taken out federal loans to pay their bills.
In years past, Hopkins President Ronald J. Daniels said, the university struggled to achieve its goal of welcoming all talented students regardless of their means or backgrounds.

(92,455 posts)good education, and wants to provide a donation for financial aid to students who couldn't afford it otherwise.
It has nothing to do with any presidential aspirations he may or may not have, and which I believe he will NOT run.
Some folks were dissing him when he was donating to Democrats in races he felt there was a good chance for them to win against the problem
It looks great, insulting someone for donating to a charity, and then at the same time some feel so inclined to dis John Hopkins. Gee, I guess those high ratings that John Hopkins gets are all made up
This was the same pattern among some who dissed Bill Gates and Warren Buffet, because they didn't meet their criteria for who they should be donating to.
Unlike Donald Trump, Bloomberg, Buffet, and Gates, they are self-made people
It reminds me of what Rachel siiad once about Hillary. If Hillary came out with the cure for cancer, the haters would find a reason to criticize that.

He and some other super wealthy people got together and started super-donating years ago.

This is a good thing. He doesn't have to give away as much as he does. And even if he gave this particular donation to curry favor, he didn't have to give nearly as much as he did, or earmark it the way he did (for those who need funding).
Look at his organization website.

(6,476 posts)a lot of donations go to football and basketball palaces (I love college sports I admit) and country club student amenities. This donation looks like it will make the difference between some kids getting a world class education or settling for a lesser option. I applaud that-as a graduate of a pricey private its obscene the amounts that are charged for tuition and costs. Universities must close the gap or higher education will be limited to the top 10.

This was a good thing for Bloomberg to do. Commendable.
