It's time to give thanks for hats, heavy coats and central heating.
Millions of Americans in the Northeast and Middle Atlantic states will wake up to the coldest Thanksgiving in more than a century, with high winds even threatening the iconic Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, meteorologists said Wednesday.
.........................................................
The lowest high temperature for a Thanksgiving in New York City came on Nov. 30, 1871, when the mercury fell to 22 degrees, according to the National Weather Service. The coldest Turkey Day in Boston was 19 degrees, in 1873. Philadelphia's coldest Thanksgiving was 28 degrees, in 1901.
New York City is also bracing for winds of 15 mph to 25 mph on Thursday, which had Macy's parade organizers on high alert Wednesday. The parade will go on, but whether the 16 giant balloons will fly is another question.
Any sustained winds of 23 mph or gusts of 34 mph would ground the massive inflatable stars, organizers said. They'll decide Thursday morning whether the balloons will be in action..................

We look forward to gathering w friends/family tomorrow.. & can't wait to watch the @Macys #ThanksgivingDayParade. 1932 was the first year that the parade was broadcasted over the radio. It's come so far since then!

(34,661 posts)actually do their friggin research. Try this,Thanks Giving week thru the first week of December 1962 one ugly cold spell. Overnight lows below zero, daytime highs in the teens. Depending on which County you lived in Northern Wisconsin, six to twenty plus inches of Snow.
Similar ugly cold conditions in 1967. And that cold latest till New years of 68'.

Oh, how will they survive 20 degrees? Trumplethinskin is tweeting about disappearance of global warming because local weather is forecast to be a little chilly. The huge manatee!

(1,586 posts)Going to be 15 degrees- feels like 1 degree when i leave the house in the morning. To early in the season for it to be so cold. Heating is going to be expensive this year.

It's also supposed to be breezy too but supposedly not at the threshold to ditch the balloons.
The original was sponsored by Gimbels downtown, which was located between 8th & 9th on Market St. (both their old and newer buildings have since been demolished) -
and has had a number of sponsors over the years after Gimbels closed down. It's currently sponsored by Dunkin Donuts.

(51,611 posts)Is there still a Strawbridge's?
BumRushDaShow
(129,109 posts)I grew up with Gimbels, Wanamakers (the flagship building downtown in Philly with the huge organ is now a Macy's), Lit's, Strawbridges, JC Penney, and Sears... The one "older" local department store left is Boscov's. Otherwise they were pretty much replaced with Target, Walmart... and a couple NY stores in addition to Macy's are still hanging on including Bloomingdales & Lord and Taylor (even Abraham & Straus is gone after being absorbed into the Macy's conglomerate).
I do also miss Woolworth's 5 & 10!!!

(51,611 posts)started to chop off the mannequins' heads I knew the end was near. For most of my pre college life Christmas shopping was done via their catalog since my great aunt worked at the great big Sears store that I think just closed. I forgot about Lit's until you mentioned it.

(129,109 posts)well that one went 24 years ago! Yikes!

(51,611 posts)That is how Philadelphians refer to it. I live in CA now and still miss it A LOT! I went to Art School at PCA, lived in Center City, worked at The Bourse Bldg and The Bellevue Stratford and moved to CA (free rent).

(129,109 posts)That Sears on Roosevelt Boulevard ("the Boulevard" ) was a HUGE landmark that "welcomed" people to "The Great Northeast" (NE Philly). Hated to see it go. Grew up going to that Sears as a kid and we would park in the back and come in through the basement where the hardware and storm door displays were.
And now that you are in CA and unless you are up in the mountains, at least you don't have to deal with 15 degree mornings like we had this morning! YIKES (too early for that)!
