DAVIDS ANNOUNCES LEADERSHIP VOTE

Source: Sharice Davids Official Website

During our campaign, I heard from people all around Kansas’ 3rd district who were ready for change. I heard that people are tired of business as usual in Washington. They were tired of representatives putting the special interests ahead of them. And, most of all, they wanted a new representative who would work to be a check on the Trump Administration and get things done.

It was the honor of my life earlier this month when they chose me to fill that role.

Since the election, I’ve met with people around the district and leaders in Washington to hear their ideas and plans for moving our country forward. I’m in the process of meeting with all the members of the Kansas delegation, regardless of party, to find ways we can work together. This week I’ll head back to Washington for additional orientation, and before I am officially sworn-in in January, I will cast my first votes to help decide who will lead the Democratic House.

I plan to vote for several younger and newer members for leadership roles in the House Democratic Caucus and I will also vote for Nancy Pelosi for Speaker of the House.

Here’s why.

First, no one else has stood up to challenge Leader Pelosi. As my new colleague, Rep. Emanuel Cleaver told the Kansas City Star, “You’ve got to have somebody to beat somebody.” Kansans didn’t elect me to go to Washington to play political games and take symbolic protest votes. They elected me to get things done. The best way to move forward as we face unprecedented threats to our healthcare access and to our democracy is to unite behind the person who is clearly going to become the next speaker, and who, whatever differences we may have, will stand up to those threats.

I would have appreciated a few positive words for Pelosi from her but I suspect she is being mindful of the voters who elected her. Fine by me, her vote counts as cast for Pelosi as much as any other's.

Rep.-elect Sharice Davids (D-Kan.) announced Saturday that she would support House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi (Calif.) in her bid to retake the Speaker's gavel.

“Kansans didn’t elect me to go to Washington to play political games and take symbolic protest votes. They elected me to get things done," Davids, who unseated incumbent Rep. Kevin Yoder (R) earlier this month, said in a statement.

"The best way to move forward as we face unprecedented threats to our healthcare access and to our democracy is to unite behind the person who is clearly going to become the next speaker, and who, whatever differences we may have, will stand up to those threats,” she added.

Davids was one of several incoming Democratic lawmakers who had remained undecided or expressed skepticism at reelecting Pelosi as the Democratic caucus’ longtime leader following an election many argued reflected a desire for change.

Nice to see. I like that she says she is there to put a check on Trump.

As a reminder - AOC (and BS) went to Kansas and campaigned against her in the primary.

"First, no one else has stood up to challenge Leader Pelosi."

Talk about a non-endorsement. So if Ms. Davids had anybody at all to stand up to challenge Pelosi, would Davids have gone in that direction.

I'd prefer a "First, Leader Pelosi has done a great job. Secondly, there wasn't anybody as qualified as her to lead the House."

She compromised so they can move on to fix things. She is voting for new membrs to be trained for Leadership roles when Nancy retires.

I thought maybe we needed new Leadership but after seeing what she is doing, has done I am with Nancy all the way. I like Steny, too.

They may be opinionated, they may disagree with establishment politicians, but they know the most important thing is to get things done. There may be some bumps along the way but our not-so-secret weapon is that we understand "loyal" and "opposition" are not mutually exclusive.

They're going to learn the ropes. Before we know it they'll be senior leaders themselves, mentoring the Parkland generation as they start running, and winning

It's gonna be exciting to witness
