Chick-fil-A responds to college blocking the fast food restaurant as a dining option
Source: Atlanta Journal Constitution
Students at a private university in New Jersey can eat more chicken as long as it's not Chick-fil-A.
Rider University removed the restaurant from a survey of dining options "based on the company's record widely perceived to be in opposition to the LGBTQ community." The fast-food chain was included in previous surveys.
Chick-fil-A says it has supported Christian values. Its corporate purpose is "To glorify God by being a faithful steward of all that is entrusted to us."
Rider says it understands some may view the decision as a "form of exclusion." But the school says it wanted to be "faithful to our values of inclusion."

(8,311 posts).... when deciding which should be allowed to build, run, and get money from college student's dining hall meal cards (aka, from student loans and Pell Grants possibly) on their own campus?
Usually these mini-chains in universities also hire students, either as work-study or pure work, to prepare the food in the mini-restaurant attached to the cafeteria. What if the university feels it's better not to accept a discriminatory business setting up on campus than deal with students being denied work-study options, or limited in which ones they can accept?
(In other words, I think you misread the article, though it wasn't very clear.)

(66,381 posts)I thought it was Chik-Fil-A that was talking about 'inclusion'.
Once again, our side is proving to be the better side.

Hell, I'm straight and I get it. No Chick-fil-A for me until they make that right.

(14,972 posts)There's no reason to provide the students with a dining option only available 6 days/week. Use that space, which is limited, for an option which will be available every day.
And for all those who expect that of course Chick-fil-A would make an exception, when the Atlanta Falcons new stadium opened it was announced that there would be a Chick-fil-A in the stadium, but it would remained closed on Sundays, despite the fact that most NFL games are on Sunday.

(50,559 posts)I can kind of understand why the Falcons would want a famous hometown restaurant chain (CFA is based in Atlanta) to have an outlet in their new stadium. But come on dude, hire people who don't celebrate Sabbath on Sunday, like Jews, Seventh-Day Adventists, Muslims and atheists, to run this store.

(2,517 posts)CFA is all over the new Braves stadium as well.

(50,559 posts)But what good is a restaurant that's only open on the rare occasions your team plays Monday or Thursday night?
RT Atlanta
(2,517 posts)the professional soccer team also uses it and they play on days other than Saturdays, along with concerts, etc., so without knowing CFA's marketing strategy other than, 'hey, this is our backyard and we dont want anyone else serving chicken sandwiches here (like McDonalds)", not sure what else to say.

(35,317 posts)have much reduced foot traffic on Sundays.
Where I went to grad school, many of the venues were closed anyway. Apart from Taco Bell (and later an Italian and a fresh Mex franchise), all the storefronts were owned by the campus.
Otherwise, the problem is "removed from the survey", thereby making the choice "no" for anybody who might have said "yes". And doing the most important thing, making sure the administrators aren't completely embarrassed by how uncultured and backwards the students are.

(37,748 posts)"Inclusion does not imply an acceptance of intolerance." It's not so much a paradox of ideas or sentiments, simply fluff letting us know not to get hung on the words, but rather the ideas behind them.
Also, John Rawls insists in A Theory of Justice that that society has a reasonable right of self-preservation that supersedes the principle of tolerance. If movements of intolerance threaten freedom, it becomes not merely a valid position, but an obligation to refuse the intolerance in an effort to maintain freedom.

(4,886 posts)I think the corporate mission statement is so odious that they shouldn't even be part of a choice.
And, really, that food they make is trash. So, a win-win in my book.

(83 posts)However, those who do not agree with the cause or agenda of the organizations it supports(,such as NOM and The Family Research Council,) also have a right to take their business elsewhere. I've been boycotting Chik-Fil-A, Hobby Lobby, and any other business or organisation that I have found to support dominionist, right-wing Christian, theocratic, anti-liberal objectives.

(9,831 posts)alone is reason enough for me to keep their crappy stuff off my dinner plate. The main reason I boycott their establishment is because A. Truett Cathy, their founder, was a bigot same as Lester Maddox was a bigot. Heck, you can make a much better sandwich at home.

I am from suburban Atlanta. From what I understand the founder was not such a pretend Christian as his son apparently is. This is new from the business since Truett Cathey died.
