Exclusive: The making of Trump's Enemies List

Source: Axios

Jonathan Swan, Mike Allen 2 hours ago

President Trump was frustrated about leaks — specifically leaks attributed to "White House officials" — that were critical of him.

Behind the scenes: Cliff Sims, a young White House communications aide who had bonded with Trump during the campaign, slipped through the private dining room and was ushered into the private study, just off the Oval Office.

As recounted in Sims' memoir — "Team of Vipers: My 500 Extraordinary Days in the Trump White House," out Jan. 29 from Thomas Dunne Books — the minister's son from Alabama was soon sitting face to face with the man he still referred to as "DJT," in leftover campaign lingo.

This was in 2017, when West Wing chaos was a constant storyline in the media.

Not quite as delusional and more competent, but still. His moment of greatest trust in you was the day he hired you. It went downhill from there, at variable speeds, depending on the individual. I remember after I'd worked there a couple years as his 2nd in command, he brought in a new hire as a clerk and he had so many discussions with her about how the office should be run, etc. It seemed weird at the time, but I chalked it up to his having known her previously. It makes a lot more sense now.

And boy howdy, that was a man who needed an audience. He would call us all in to his office and it might start out work related, but it soon drifted to him and his opinions on anything and everything. I finally took to carrying files and walking past his office door very quickly so it would look like I was in the middle of helping the public out front. It's the only way I could get my work done.
