An armed man who fired shots inside a Sebring, Florida, SunTrust Bank branch — which reportedly left multiple people injured — has surrendered after a standoff, authorities said.

According to an alert by the Highlands County Sheriff’s Office, deputies and Sebring police responded to the bank on U.S. Highway 27 about 12:30 p.m. after a person called the agency’s dispatch and reported he had fired shots inside the bank.

The Highlands County Sheriff’s Office said there would be a press conference at 4:30 p.m. at the sheriff’s office in Sebring.

Meanwhile, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has also commented on the shooting, tweeting that he spoke to Highlands County Sheriff Paul Blackman and Florida Department of Law Enforcement Commissioner Rick Swearingen about the “tragic shooting.”

but assume it's someone addressing their life problems with a gun. Ten years ago I would have assumed a robbery gone bad when reading the article's title.

if the shooter 'surrendered,' can we presume that means the person is white? Article doesnt ID the shooter for now.

I have a hard time imagining Swat storming the bank and then giving a black shooter enough time to surrender.

Hate it for the victims and hope they injuries are not life threatening and that they can all recover.

Zephen Xaver: 5 Fast Facts You Need to Know

Facebook
Zephen Xaver has been identified as the suspect in the SunTrust Bank shooting in Sebring, Florida, that left five dead.

Zephen Xaver has been identified as the suspect accused of opening fire inside a bank in Sebring, Florida, killing at least five people before barricading himself inside the building and eventually surrendering to a SWAT team, authorities say. Xaver was taken into custody about 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday after police responded to an active shooter call about 12:30 p.m.

Few details about Xaver and the shooting have been released so far. The incident occurred at the SunTrust Bank branch at 1901 US 27 South in Sebring, the Highlands County Sheriff’s Office said. Deputies responded to the shooting along with the Sebring Police Department.

Police swarmed the bank and surrounded the building, shutting down the road in the area just after noon on January 23. At least two schools in the neighborhood were put on lockdown as a precaution. There were reports of a hostage situation inside the bank, but police did not immediately confirm if the suspect was holding anyone inside the building before he came out and was taken into custody. It is also not known if anyone was injured along with those who were killed.

. . .

Zephen Xaver’s Facebook page reveals few details about him. Xaver “likes” the page of far-right activist Milo Yiannopoulos along with a page dedicated to memes featuring conspiracy theorist Alex Jones.

when I lived in Sebring- briefly - in 2002-2004. Let me add that Sebring FL is the place where I saw my first John Birch Society billboard, ever! I didn't even know they existed anymore. Definitely a right-wing, low intelligence area. They made me the president of the local Democratic Party headquarters after my first meeting there. There aren't very many Democrats in that area. They were desperate, I guess. Admitting you're a Democrat can be dangerous in Highlands County.

Suspect, 21, in custody
Incident occurred just after 12.30pm in Sebring

Wed 23 Jan 2019 17.10 EST

At least five people have been killed at a Florida bank and the suspect is in custody, authorities said.

The 21-year-old suspect, identified as Zephen Xaver, walked into the SunTrust Bank in Sebring, south Florida, just after 12.30pm local time, and began shooting, the Sebring police chief, Karl Hoglund, said at a news conference.

A brief hostage-type situation arose after Xaver called police himself and said he had fired shots inside the bank, according to authorities.

After negotiators failed to convince the suspect to leave the bank, the Highlands county sheriff’s office swat team entered the building and continued to talk to the gunman, police said. He eventually surrendered.

By Nicholas Sakelaris

Jan. 24 (UPI) -- A man accused of shooting five people dead at a central Florida bank was a former prison worker who his ex-girlfriend said "always hated people."

Suspect Zephen Xaver appeared in court Thursday after the attack in Sebring, Fla., and was appointed a public defender. He was denied bond on five counts of premeditated murder.

Sebring Police Chief Karl Hoglund said Xaver started shooting in the Sun Trust Bank Wednesday and called 911 to tell dispatchers he'd killed five people. A SWAT team had him in custody a short time later. By then, all five victims had died, Hoglund said.

State Attorney Brian Haas said a grand jury in the coming weeks could indict Xaver on first-degree murder charges.

"I never understood where it started," she said. "For some reason [he] always hated people and wanted everyone to die."

She also said Xaver always liked firearms and bought a gun last week.

"Every single person I've told has not taken it seriously, and it's very unfortunate that it had to come to this," she said."
