US envoy claims 'significant progress' in talks with Taliban
Source: AP
U.S. peace envoy Zalmay Khalilzad said Saturday that significant progress was made during lengthy talks with the Taliban in Qatar and that he was traveling to Afghanistan for more discussions aimed at ending the countrys destructive 17-year war.
Khalilzad said on his official Twitter account that he wants to build on six days of meetings in Doha, the capital of Qatar.
Meetings here were more productive than they have been in the past, he said without providing details. We made significant progress on vital issues.
The Taliban said this week its representatives met Monday with U.S. representatives in Qatar to discuss ending the invasion of Afghanistan.

It'll fall apart, at least partially because the US will renege.
In the end, it won't be the US's fault but the faction of the US that's 'not us', whoever 'us' is doing the speaking. There'll be a disaster.
And the peace and abnegation of commitments will be swamped by the claim that the US 'lost the war'. There may even be a nice evacuation of the embassy that most will somehow think is the emergency retreat of the US military.
The one difference is that there aren't many in the US who support the Taliban. I've dealt with some, and as before some de-facto Taliban supporters are as much anti-US/Western as pro-whatever. They just don't call themselves "Taliban supporters", but apart from that phrase there's not much difference between the two sides in what actions they call for.

(101,321 posts)At least 43 people were killed and 54 injured in Monday's attack, the NDS intelligence service told the BBC.
Insurgents blew their way into the base using a car bomb before opening fire. Some reports put the toll at over 100.
It is one of the deadliest attacks on the secret service and follows a string of battlefield setbacks for the army.

That is, apparently, "significant progress".

Squeeze Pakistan hard enough and the Taliban problem would be solved. Unfortunately, a lot of State Dept. mandarins have a soft corner for Pakistan.
