Huawei allegedly stole secrets from T-Mobile lab
Source: Herald Business Journal
Supposed stolen information on replicating Tappy, a T-Mobile robot housed in Bellevue and used to test cellphones, has led to a 10-count grand jury indictment against Huawei, a Chinese-based telecoms giant with offices in the Seattle region.
As I told Chinese officials in August, China must hold its citizens and Chinese companies accountable for complying with the law, said Acting Attorney General Matthew G. Whitaker, in a news release. Id like to thank the many dedicated criminal investigators from several different federal agencies who contributed to this investigation and the Department of Justice attorneys who are moving the prosecution efforts forward. They are helping us uphold the rule of law with integrity.
The charges, unsealed Monday, Jan. 28, are the latest installment of action taken against the technology company and follow a T-Mobile lawsuit filed in 2014. A jury awarded the phone company $4.8 million in 2017 over stolen trade secrets.
T-Mobile declined to comment for this story. Huawei could not be reached for comment.

(11,522 posts)Stealing trade secrets is what Chinese companies do, if Whitaker thinks he'll ever get Chinese officials to change that I've got ocean front property in Arizona for sale.

(3,502 posts)I don't necessarily disagree that intellectual property should somehow be safeguarded. That said, I don't feel very sorry for companies that moved or started operations in China to take advantage of "cheap labor" or to establish themselves in the fastest growing market in the world. They should expect some "leakage" to occur and what if the Chinese just reverse engineer everything in their back yard like a lot of American companies have done legally? It's hard, unless you're a drug company these days, to prevent others from stealing/adapting proven working technologies and techniques. In the end that's part of what capitalism does, discovers more efficient methodologies of providing wanted items to the market.
