House GOP Backs Off Spending Demands To Prevent Government Shutdown

Source: TPM

House Republicans have dropped their demands to cut spending on domestic programs, for the time being, and instead unveiled bipartisan legislation to keep the government funded through the end of the year at previously-agreed-upon levels.

The legislation, introduced this week by House Appropriations Committee Chairman Hal Rogers (R-KY), represents a shift in the GOP’s posture since taking over the House in January 2011. They have routinely used must-pass bills as a vehicle to advance budgetary goals, risking multiple government shutdowns and even a U.S. default.

But with the election less than two months away, Republicans recognize that touching off another showdown would be too politically dangerous. Senate Democrats have insisted for months that Republicans honor funding levels they agreed to in last year’s debt limit deal and have made clear they won’t budge from those numbers.

“I’m deeply disappointed that the House and Senate were unable to complete Appropriations bills before the end of the fiscal year,” Rogers said in a statement. “Unfortunately, with the Senate’s inaction and election-year politics in play, our committee’s bills will not be negotiated before the end of the fiscal year, and therefore a temporary funding Band-Aid is necessary to prevent a government shutdown.”

when one of these fucks stands up and says, "we've been acting like spoiled children," and apologizes to the nation for their unconscionable behavior throughout President Obama's first term and indeed for the past 30 to 40 years.

well i may be happy without that, but it will be in spite of them not because of them. GAWD they make me sick.

the reason why they are so bipartisan all the sudden is glaringly transparent. What time is it kiddies, time where their obstinate party could be revealed for what it is. A political party full of thugs that think nothing of holding the american people hostage to their outmoded thinking among a host of transgressions. Rogers, go to hell.

the powers to be see where this election is headed and know full well if the House forces any kind of drama of a government shutdown, they will likely get blown out of the house, too.

And, make no mistake, seeing the potential of losing their newfound cushy job, all these tea bagger scumbags are now going to go into self interest mode. They will be dicks only so long as it does not allow the potential of them losing their jobs.

People do not want their social programs cut or messed with. Tax the rich and get the top 20 companies to pay taxes that they have not paid in at least 4 years if not 10 years.

You are absolutely correct.

My line has been if you can buy a 6 figure car, 7 figure boat or airplane, and live in a huge mansion then you should be taxed accordingly. Unfortunately the GOP is blocking this idea.
