House panel authorizes subpoena for acting attorney general

Source: Yahoo

The U.S. House Judiciary Committee voted along party lines on Thursday to authorize a subpoena in case acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker fails to show up to a hearing on Friday or declines to answer certain questions.

House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerrold Nadler said he hopes he will not need to issue the subpoena, which was authorized in a vote of 23-13, but that he fears Whitaker could dodge questions about Special Counsel Robert Mueller's investigation or his communications with the White House.

"This resolution merely authorizes the subpoena," Nadler said. "If Mr. Whitaker appears in the hearing room, as scheduled, and if he provides direct answers to our questions, then I have no intention of ever issuing this subpoena."

Whitaker says he won’t testify unless Democrats drop their subpoena threat

By Karoun Demirjian and Devlin Barrett February 7 at 12:45 PM

Acting attorney general Matthew G. Whitaker said he will not appear before Congress Friday without assurances he won’t be subpoenaed — giving Democrats a deadline of 6 p.m. Thursday to respond.

Whitaker’s move came shortly after the House Judiciary Committee voted along party lines to give its chairman the authority to subpoena Whitaker’s testimony, should he fail to appear or answer lawmakers’ questions.

Democrats have vowed to press Whitaker at the hearing about his conversations with President Trump, and Whitaker’s decision not to recuse himself from special counsel Robert S. Mueller III’s investigation of Russian interference in the 2016 election.

“I remain willing to appear to testify tomorrow, provided that the chairman assures me that the committee will not issue a subpoena today or tomorrow, and that the committee will engage in good faith negotiations before taking such a step down the road,” Whitaker said in a statement.

He is trying to drag this out. Expect the same from all who are subpoenaed.

Mr Big Junk Potty... He's not smart enough to know how to handle this well. And neither are any of the people he might seek advice from.

You can't ignore a subpoena, it will come and get you.

Acting attorney general Whitaker to testify before Congress on Friday. He said earlier he wouldn’t do so if under subpoena threat.

By Devlin Barrett and Karoun Demirjian February 7 at 8:20 PM

BREAKING: Rep. Jerrold Nadler tweeted Thursday evening that Matthew G. Whitaker “will appear tomorrow morning at 9:30 am,” capping a dramatic daylong standoff over whether Whitaker would scrap his appearance entirely over the Democrats’ threat to subpoena him.

The agreement sets up a potentially dramatic confrontation over President Trump and the special counsel investigation into the 2016 campaign.

This is a developing story. It will be updated.
